If you don't like mastodons path to a more straightforward rock sound what do you think of baroness? I think purple is their best

this is my actual favorite. blood mountain's definitely my favorite record by them and probably more straightforward than everything they've done except once more round the sun

Dunno if this was directed towards me, but Baroness is one of my faves. Blue Record is my favorite by them. Baizley's a killer vocalist on that release and it's perfect combination of sludge, stoner, and prog influences. The first couple EPs and Red are also killer. Green & Yellow had some awesome individual tracks (Eula, Take My Bones Away, Board Up The House), but a lot of filler that could have been cut out. Purple is solid, but I honestly need to give it a few more listens because it's been a bit since I've listened to that.

Word I was just curious since those bands tend to go hand in hand. Definitely spend more time with purple, it's like they took what they learned on yellow and green and trimmed the fat so to speak. Really substantial release especially coming off of the van accident and line up change

yeah i think i like purple best. no shame on the other dudes that left but i really feel like this is their tightest rhythm section to date.

So are there any albums from this year that you just recently discovered and are playing catch up on?

So are there any albums from this year that you just recently discovered and are playing catch up on? I will say that I've been playing Zhrine's Unortheta a lot lately after not paying much attention to it earlier in the year.

Metal (and one metallic hardcore) releases from this year I'm getting into much later than I probably should have:

Astronoid - Air (This release has been brought up here before, but I've doubled downed on this over the last week or so. It's phenomenal. Probably would be in my Top 25 now if I redid it.)

Totem Skin - Weltschmerz (Technically this came out in 2015, but the North American vinyl release was in 2016 so I'm going to cheat a bit and include this.)

Call of the Void - Are You Fucking Kidding Me (Probably the most appropriate album title to summarize the entirety of 2016.)

Memoriam - Hellfire Demos (Bolt Thrower is dead. Long live the spirit of Bolt Thrower).

Withdrawal - Never (Metallic hardcore from the barren wastelands of the Canada. FFO Integrity, Bolt Thrower, Disembodied.)

It's not Baizley. Dude who did the artwork for that release is named Chris Panatier. They're very similar stylistically in terms of type of art and themes though.

Different strokes for different folks. Pretend is one of the better songs I've heard in a while. It's been on my workout playlist for the last few weeks so that's gotten a few more listens than any other track on the release.
