Probably not an opinion you would get from a fan who's listened to them since their start, but Blissfucker was my introduction and I love it still. Need to check out their new album.

If you are looking for a quick listen then Seizures in Barren Praise is pretty good too. If you are looking for an even shorter listen then Filth Rations is one of the most intense 13 minutes I can remember but doesn't have some of their more repeated groovy heavy parts that can be so rewarding.

Opeth and Gojira are playing the same day as Tom Petty heckk. I would probably enjoy Opeth and Gojira a lot more but I also love Tom Petty I would feel awful if this ended up being one of Tom Petty's last big tours or if he dies or something awful.

I'd start with Seizures in Barren Praise and work your way forward. Truth be told, you can't really go wrong with any of their releases though.

While that new Mastodon LP sounds cool in concept, I've lost interest in them in a band with each passing release. I'd love for them to go back to the sounds of Leviathan, but I know that's a far cry.

I love Mastodon's older stuff, and can understand someone preferring that sound, but to not realize how well they've executed what they're going for on each record

Are you the dude in the Metallica thread that didn't like the first 4 records all that much.

i'm not decrying their talent and overall progression at all, but their newer stuff just doesn't appeal to me as much. the prog/hard-rock learning direction they've been on since crack the skye just bores me a lot of the time. probably the same reasons i don't like later era opeth all that much.

mastodon started and stopped making prog on crack the skye. did you listen to the hunter or once more around the sun?

The Hunter was pretty cool but didn't really hit me like Crack the Skye did or even Blood Mountain. Never got around to the last one

Yep. Note that I said prog/hard-rock leaning. They're still metal albums. Crack the Skye is their only album that'd I'd consider a full-out divergence into prog territory, but there's definitely still those influences present on their last two releases.

eh. they're rock records to me. agree to disagree. picking and choosing genre terms is just splitting hairs anyways.

Regardless, this is still the best song they've ever put out. Consider this my controversial opinion for the day...
