In the last few years I've loved Kvelertak, Deafheaven, Cloudkicker, Pallbearer.

Grew up on Metallica and really like Maiden and Megadeth, so I can do the thrash thing.

My biggest no-go is generally lyrics about like murder and satanism and corpses on the album cover and all that shit. Just an instant turnoff. (I know, I know, cue judgment)

For Deafheaven, Alcest has a new album:

Oathbreaker is an interesting mix of post-black and hardcore. Not sure if it's my thing but it's an interesting idea:

As far as thrash, both Sodom and Testament have both put out new albums. They've been around since the 80's with the other big names.

Also I mentioned Ripper in my post, probs my fav thrash album this year. Sounds like Sepultura (maybe it's because they're also Brazilian) but obviously faster.

I'm not really a doom guy, but if you like Pallbearer I think you'll like Khemmis. Metal Archives lists Pallbearer as the artist they are most similar to. If nothing else, check them out.

Also just listened to this yesterday. It's in the same vein of Deafheaven, but I think it's better even if the album is too damn long:

nails rules but I didn't have nearly the reaction to their new release that I did with Abandon All Life

it's reactionary sure but I don't think it was as well concieved as AAL either

    Here's Decibel's Top 40 of 2016:

SPOILER: Here Are Decibel's Top 40 Albums of 2016

I've always used Decibel's list as a guide to what I missed int he previous year. Overall, I agree with a lot of the list. Nails, Blood Incantation, Inter Arma, and Cobalt are probably all in my personal top 10. This list also reinforces the fact that I need to listen to Khemmis. Going to give them a spin this afternoon.

Already checked out Funeral Moth (at 14 on Decibel's list). Soild Japanese minimalist funeral doom.

Other than the screams at the end of "Second Son of R." being pretty tough for me to get through, Oathbreaker's Rheia is pretty fucking rad.

Oof, not feeling that Decibel list at all. Meshuggah being so high is strange, they don't seemed to have pushed the envelope much and they're ranked above much more creative stuff. The Testament album is alright but the Sodom one is better in my opinion (as far as classic thrash bands) and it's not even on the list. Eternal Champion makes it and no Sumerlands? Abbath at number 5??? That album is one of the most straightforward and paint-by-the-numbers black metal albums of the year. Don't understand how Nails made it to #2, that album is like 20 minutes long.

And the most egregious error...no Vektor. Like, I understand that album was hyped to high heaven but you have to actively try to not list it in the top 40, or not even be aware that it was released. Like, unforgivable.

Glad you're enjoying it, Rheia is probably frontrunner for my AOTY right now (it's between that and Dillinger's metal release-wise). As for my AOTY in general it's between those two, Pkew, Pkew Pkew and Tegan and Sara (& they all switch around depending on my mood).

There are some gems on that Decibel list though. Funeral Moth, SubRosa, Blood Incantation, Oranssi Pazuzu, Cobalt. The Testament and Abbath inclusions are a bit of a headscratcher. Not gonna disagree with you there. Assuming that this list is actually based on some sort of objective ranking scheme, Eternal Champion only made it in at 39. Sumerlands could've been 41 for all we know.

I will, however, defend the inclusion of Nails to the death however. How cares how long the album is? The fact that there is no filler with so much brevity is one of the album's strong points. Plus, grind/hardcore influenced albums will always be short. Hell, my current #1 album this year is a hardcore album that only clocks in at 18 minutes (Pure Disgust, btw. Check it out if you like sick 80's influenced, throwback style HC). Plus, the fact that Decibel included Nails so high was foreshadowed a bit with this album cover:

I agree with the Vektor exclusion too. Those boys have some talent, but all of the wankery makes it so hard for me to listen to that album beyond a track or two at a time. I call that Dream Theater syndrome.

With that being said, it's one list. Loudwire and Revolver will shit out more terrible lists by the end of it all. At least Decibel is a somewhat reputable magazine that includes some real underground stuff on their list.
