As I Lay Dying's Shadows are Security is such a great album.

Since we are talking about Zao, Dan Dan Weyadant has guest vocals on the song Control Is Dead.

Shadows Are Security is to me the quintessential metalcore album. It's got breakdowns, a few clean choruses here and there, and the guitar harmonies. It basically taught me how to play guitar. And yeah, Dan sounds like a freaking saber tooth tiger in that song.

Violent sleep of reason may be a top 5 album for me this year. Flawless and brutal.

Meshuggah sometimes gets lumped into the djent category but they really are a different breed. Rhythmically I can see it but tonally it's so much more grating. I love it.

So many great metal releases lately. Red Fang, Khemmis, Darkthrone, Anciients, Barishi, Mouth of the Architect, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Summerlands, Auroch, Gatecreeper, True Widow, Asphyx, Meshuggah, and probably some more I'm forgetting.

Didn't realize Red Fang released something new. Gonna have to get on that.

The new Wormrot is good. I'm still digesting it as a whole. I loved them when they were an Insect Warfare-ripoff band, but their progression is neat. Some of the riffs on the album are some of the most unique grind guitarwork I've heard in a while.

I've heard described as "grindcore for people who don't like grindcore." I'm not really a grind guy but I do like it lol

As a guy who loves straightforward grind, that's probably why I'm having to take some time to really soak it in. Their first two records are straightforward, grinding aural assaults.

Ulcerates new album is out and everyone's talking about how good it is. Yall should check it out. They are a strong contender for the absolute heaviest band I can think of and are modern day legends at this point. For fans of post metal and innovative experimental weird stuff. Their last album recieved critical acclaim and got a 7.7 on p4k

OK, it's a Vonnegut quote - this makes it pretty cool.

I personally was really bored by the new Neurosis. I'll leave this thread before I get a tomato thrown at me.

New Anaal Nathrakh is pretty good. I know some of it dropped last month but just listening to it now.

The Demilich/Hooded Menace/Vastum show was pretty good. It was at a bar that pretty much only books metal bands. When I walked in, I was instantly the least trve person in the room. Battle jackets everywhere.

Demilich was obviously good. They were the only ones who actually said stuff between songs, which was cool because of their Finnish accents. Hooded Menace was good but not very exciting. Vastum blew me away. They had so much energy! Consider me a fan from now on.

Next up, Vektor w/Black Fast in November!

Crowbar is going on tour with Goatwhore and Wake. Gonna try and catch this show. It's coming to a venue that just recently became all ages close to me and I'm excited for it.

Quick correction - the opening band on the tour isn't Wake. It's a doom band called Lillake that features current and former members of Suicidal Tendencies and the Faceless.

How does one make the switch from tech death to doom?

Maybe being in a band with Michael Keene drives you away from playing tech death entirely? Either way, Evan's not in the band anymore according to their Facebook page and Metal Archives (Lillake - Encyclopaedia Metallum: The Metal Archives), but the other guitarist is in Wretched. That's a pretty impressive lineup just based on their pedigree.
