prog metal is super hit or miss, I guess it depends on which sub-genre a particular band falls closer to. Opted to me are a little more rooted or grounded in traditional metal and rock structures, whereas something like Dream Theater (ugh) are just wankery.

You could probably even classify bands like Mastodon or Baroness or Kylesa as "progressive" metal since they push the boundaries of their genre. But yeah, if we're talking bands that are just straight up prog, I can't really get into any of it save for Opeth. Can't get into Porcupine Tree at all and as we've established, Dream Theater are awful.

well yeah thats why i qualified it with "straight up" prog metal. because the word progressive isnt bad itself. but there's a difference between a mastodon or a baroness and a modern day opeth or dream theater. yeah obv opeth isnt as bad as the latter but (havent heard sorceress yet) their last couple albums are still pretty much straight up prog. which is just boring to me.

So glad I caught them on the undoing ruin live tour last year. One of the greatest moments I've ever had. I'll regularly spin that album front to back. Kris Norris was a beast on it, I was so bummed when he left.

It's pretty awesome though that Kris Norris is contributing guest solos on the new record.

I liked that. Never heard them before. This genre is so immense with recent talent it seems. I'm always playing catchup, but not necessarily a bad thing.

I remember them being similar to Wolves ItTT except AB were crust punks instead of forest hippies... I'll check this out...

????? wolves came from the crust scene too

    didn't know that

I mean, with all that living in the forest thing I assumed they were kind of an independent thing

in all cases, I was talking of a more aesthetic perception, not actual facts

their 2004 demo was very crust punk and you can still hear traces of that in albums like two hunters. but yes later on they became part of the environmentally conscious scene (ive heard it called green metal, environ-metal, eco-metal, whatever). they actually live on a self sustaining farm, not a forest. its pretty cool imo

are we still lucky to be here? Prestigious

^I'm still not sold on it despite Kris's presence though. It's likely that it'll be a step in the right direction with that and the Godcity production. It probably won't be Sumerian-core garbage. However, they'll never top the run they had between Hidden Hands and Deliver Us. I'll still give it a listen though despite being jaded towards them.

The drummer for Indian and Lord Mantis apparently passed away over the weekend. RIP. From All Purity was a banger.

What a bummer. Indian was the first band to get me into doom/sludge.
