Ask @swboyd - I'm fairly new to them but I like what I've heard. I think I like Rust more than their new album but both are solid. They can be a little generic at times but I still enjoy them.

It's one of those things that just needs to click for you. Their stupid heaviness is the primary source of their charm. The riffs are solid too. It really translates well when you see them in a live setting. Plus they use industrial elements on their later releases most cohesively than Code Orange.

Dimmu Borgir would be okay if it weren't for the cornball symphonic elements. So many times a solid band is ruined by fucking symphonic nonsense. Fleshgod Apocalypse is another good example. Although those guys last record was really good so it's not as bad in their case.

Bleeding Through did it well in my opinion but that's about the only band I like with symphonic elements.

Shit just doesn't work 99% of the time. Especially since it's always black or death metal bands where there's already so much going on musically with a lot of sonic landscape being taken up; cramming in a whole symphony (or a synthesized one) just makes everything sound muddied and dizzy. And not in the good way that a band can be disorientating like Portal or something ha.

Inquisition are still my favorite band doing black metal right now. Totally unrivaled. That Chthe'ilist record was pretty solid too, I haven't listened to it for a minute. Might go revisit it now.

Chthe'ilist opened me up into the dark world of cavernous death metal and I've loved it ever since

Inquistion would be a much better black metal band IMO, if the vocals didn't sound like a broken air conditioner speaking in tongues.

Inquisition vox defs took me some serious getting used to but once I did, I love 'em. Even though they do sound like Popeye formed a metal band. But hey, if anything that's some real inspiration - no matter how bad you may think your vocals are, if there's a place for nasal-vibration vocals in metal, there's a place for you too!

I need to dive further into Pelican's discography. All I've listened to is Forever Becoming and Ataraxia/Taraxis. What is considered essential Pelican?

Pelican's entire discography is solid. Start with Australasia and Fire In The Throats...

Maybe what I'll do this week is spend each day with a different metal band and explore their discography a bit, starting with Pelican today
