Really exploded with the stanist. For some perspective, my cousin is a huge huge fan...he also lives in a third world country where electricity is hard to come by. Yet he will still torrent all their shit and rock out.

 

I dunno how into their new stuff you guys are, but I have an advance of The Contortionist's new album and it's absolutely insane. They really focused on their strengths with atmosphere and haunting melodies, while still keeping a ton of dynamics in the instrumentation. I'm usually not huge into progressive metal as a genre I listen to often, but this may end up my AOTY.

 

I really can't wait to hear the full length

 

I definitely think they saved a lot of the best material and most aggressive/technical tracks for the album. I probably would've picked some different singles if I were the band, but it's not an easy album to pick singles from.

 

Yeah, one time I walked in (this was shortly before I started working there) and all of a sudden the whole back wall had like, Emperor, Death, Venom, Bathory, and Cannibal Corpse and I was kind of blown away haha. Earlier last year we got in Watain which was even more surprising, and just recently got a Gojira shirt. Which is kind of surprising as well but they're evidently gaining more attention lately than I'd realized.

It's just weird to me that they exploded with that album, to me at least, because it wasn't really any different or any more accessible than their previous work. Maybe it was just a perfect storm of getting the right exposure in the right places, touring more broadly, or whatever else. Either way I'm stoked to see them doing so well.

 

Been waiting forever and my expectations are high. This is good to hear.

 

You know, actually, I was joking at first, but I wouldn't be surprised if Hot Topic's old backbone of consumers actually are growing up and seeking out heavier and more intense things. Given the fact that people who were probably about 14 or so in Hot Topic's big heyday would probably reaching their late teens to maybe about 20 years old now, it'd make sense to me that they're looking for harsher stuff than Chunk No Captain Chunk or whatever the fuck that means, lol. My music taste started out somewhat similar and only got harsher as time went on, personally.

Also this is fiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiilthy holy shit.

 

TAIM is really par the course for them...my problem is that Holy War impressed me so much I feel like dear desolation is a slight step back. Still a solid deathcore album.

Without actually listening to or knowing anything about "Who Bit the Moon" or the artist that put it out, you should really listen to Primitive Man. That'll satisfy that itch you need to scratch, mate.

Gonna echo that sentiment because I've maybe heard 15-20 of the albums on that list. My standouts of the ones that @theagentcoma mentioned are Tomb Mold, Memoriam, Full of Hell, and Power Trip. White Death would be up there too, but I can't support them due to some sketchy associations with the NS movement.

TIL I really like bands that are similar to Incantation.

Obviously hard to cut it down to a fraction of the list, but these are the standouts for me. I left off Power Trip and Tomb Mold because they are amazing and everyone should have heard them by now. Also it's unforgivable but I also forgot Darkest Hour, which is obviously good too.

EDIT - Dammit I forgot Coagulating Darkness by Hellripper, which is some intense black/speed. That one for sure is one of my favs this year.
