Pretty much. Except rather than the in-your-face militant type of trve kvltist, he's the type to just make passive snide remarks like they're the most natural thing in the world. He's also been recorded saying things like "if you're a man, I don't take you seriously if you don't drink beer and watch sport", and "'having fun' is a waste of time". Completely unironically. I sometimes feel like he's an alien trying and failing to integrate in human society. It's fascinating.

Underrated contender for album of the year:

Maktbehov was a barn burner, and the tracks released from this so far indicate that their new album is going to be at least on par with that one. Hoping that their association with Party Smasher means they'll make it over to the US at some point.

So much shit to catch up on, ho boy. A few notes from my recent listening:

    - New Rings Of Saturn is top-notch. I've liked all their albums but Ultu Ulla definitely impressed me with how coherent it felt. I won't deny claims that RoS are wanky. They are, it's part of their sound. I just happen to like their sound. And Ultu Ulla is certainly still over-the-top technical and wanky, but there was something about the songwriting on this one that came off as much more coherent and tightly-composed than Lugal Ki En. Lugal Ki En was a bit jittery and all over the place, but Ultu Ulla, I find, latches onto a groove per each song and just keeps going - and in other cases when the octopus-hand sweeps start going, it never feels off-rhythm or strange. Need to listen more, but definite thumbs up from me on this one.

    - New Dodecahedron. It's so strange - every time I listen, I like it, but I can never remember a damn thing about this album. Might be due in part to how I keep falling asleep whilst listening since I always listen at night (I have to do that where black metal is concerned) but nevertheless, odd one out. Gonna keep trying to see if it sticks.

    - New Make Them Suffer. Dunno how I feel about this one. Neverbloom is great, and I fuuuuuucking adore Old Souls - but this one was a definite change of pace. Maybe I need to stop hoping for Old Souls part two, but this one was such a change of pace to... Not what I'd call a "tamer" sound, per say, but definitely more atmospheric, in a way, and simpler.

Also, New Standard Elite's entire roster is to die for. Brutal-death done right and I'm not sure that label can do any sort of wrong by me.

Still on the list to catch up on: Oceans Ate Alaska, Abhorrent Decimation, Converge, In This Moment, Cytotoxin, Integrity, and Omnipotent Hysteria (even though I think this one came out last year).

If anyone enjoyed the Artificial Brain album from earlier this year, you'll love this. It's in the same vein, though a bit more chaotic with none of the atmosphere. Not surprised that they share a member with AB:

These guys definitely lean more towards the hardcore side of things and remind me of a lot of bands in the mid 2000's era.

    Update:

    - Abhorrent Decimation is straightforward death metal with clean production but never to the point of being overdone. Vocals are a thick, dry howl and fuck me those drums are punishing. The kick drums are a neverending earthquake at the bottom of the mix. This is good shit.

    - In This Moment's "Ritual". Yeah okay this album is a banger. I'm probably the only one here who enjoys their shit, which I understand completely, but I can't help it, I've been drawn to this band ever since I caught them live a couple years ago. Maria Brink's voice continues to be fantastic, that Rob Halford feature was pretty rad, and the songwriting continues to be simple but tight. I definitely think this is a step up from Black Widow, which felt pretty all-over-the-place with its songwriting and stylistic shifts, especially in regards to those odd electronic interludes here and there which really didn't fit, IMO. None of that here on Ritual, and it's all the better for it. It gets a bit same-y, but I don't mind at all.

    - Cytotoxin. Tech-death madness and brutality all-around. Again, absolutely ferocious drums. That plus something about the technical riffing of this album in particular really hooked me. I'm usually not a fan of hyper-noodly riffs except the rare occasion when I'm in the mood for that specifically but this band has something about the way they do it that makes it awesome. Vox on this album are as strong as they were on Radiophobia, so they're punishing as ever. Side note: reading the title makes me chuckle because I know a tad bit about pronunciation of the Cyrillic alphabet so "Gammageddon" as written would sound very strange if said aloud.

Also, Morbid Angel's Altars Of Madness finally clicked with me, so that's cool.
