Tosin is absolutely one of the best guitarists alive, his stuff just doesn't resonate with me really. AAL have a few heaters though. Physical Education is the big one

Maybe it's me but for some reason I can never get into bands like that

I was really into this album for a bit last spring. Instrumental, proggy, techy, djent stuff. Really good guitar wankery with some slower passages and a good rhythm section:

Meshuggah is funny because they don't want to be associated with the genre that was heavily inspired by them and they're the unofficial djent godfathers, which is a disservice to their legacy

And I don't really listen to AAL but I saw them open for Thrice on the 2012 farewell tour and I just could not understand what Tosin's fingers were doing while he was playing. I was ensorcelled.

Ensorcell is the name of my symphonic power metal band.

But are Meshuggah a djent band or a groove metal band? Hmmmm…

Why do so many groove metal bands have so little groove?

I like black metal but I really do enjoy occasionally dropping a take like this in extreme metal communities just to watch the black metal nerds freak the fuck out.

I am convinced that groove metal is like the 19th floor from Sideways Stories From Wayside School in that everyone acts like it's a real genre and it very much has plenty of bands that get attributed to it (most of which I feel belong to a different genre altogether), but I would lay down my life insisting it doesn't actually exist. It's a phantom genre.

Been getting into Of Malice and Magnum Heart once again and honestly I think this is the gold standard for metalcore. Some of the mosh parts on this record are ridiculous. You can count on one hand the amount of bands that would make spoken word parts sound sick.

  22. Not sure if it's a hot take but I always gravitated towards their other albums much more than that one, and I still don't know why.

Agreed. I don't have super diverse taste or anything but this is an album I can go back to any time and enjoy it. Remember listening to this album and that within blood ill tempered non-stop in college.
