Been a minute since I heard any news from that band

I fell off of Erra big time after Augment. I really liked Garrison as a vocalist. The current one is so monotone, and there's more and more clean vocals by Jesse, which are by no means bad, but they're better when used sparingly imo

 

Man the new album is absolutely fantastic

 

I always feel like the outlier in that I really enjoy both ERRA and Periphery's vocals.

 

I have a love/hate relationship with Spencer’s vocals in Periphery

 

The only ERRA song that ever really hit for me was Breach. I don't know if I just haven't given them enough of a chance, but nothing else ever really stuck out to me like that one.

 

I just can't do the whole Sumerian sound/djent(?)/modern progressive metal thing at all most of the time. every single one of those bands are identical to my ears.

 

I think it was Finn from Punk Rock MBA who said that all this guitarist driven djent/prog metal stuff lately is just technical wank for guitar nerds and a lot of these guys don’t know how to really write songs. I kinda agree with that, like technical stuff is cool but if that is all you have to offer, then eeeeeehhhhhhhhh

 

I was super into the djent stuff from 2010-2013 or so. I hit that stuff every once in awhile but it got old real fast

 

That said, if your whole bag as a project or a band is just that, more power to ya

 

They also all play headless Kissels for some reason

 

It's not djent, but it'll do.

 

Periphery's MO more than anything is just super technical wanking on guitar; they don't really write songs per se

 

Ash from Sumerian straight up said the biggest thing that holds Periphery back is that they both don’t know how to write catchy songs nor do they know to market the catchy songs they have and he’s right. Like he brought up an anecdote that one tour, he pushed them to play Jetpacks Was Yes and when they did, they were stunned at how much people liked the song.

 

That's odd considering how catchy Marigold, Icarus Lives and The Parade Of Ashes are.

Except for animals as leaders. Tosin always gets put down as overrated but he is very much appropriately rated.
