I could go deeper and maybe give some black metal recs that might scratch the itch, but let's start there.

 

while @swboyd ’s recs are v good I would suggest going a little bit more black metal

these two are decidedly more black metal but with elements of other genres & modern clean production

 

In addition to ones mentioned, I would also recommend Respire. Their 2018 album Dénouement is great and they were gearing up for a new album as would-be labelmates of Svalbard before everything that happened with Holy Roar.

Both are good recs, but I was trying to avoid going all out with the black metal recs as it's something Micah indicated they might be reticent to get into. If actual black metal were an option, the floodgates on some of the other recs I have would have opened.

Awesome, thanks everyone. I enjoyed the two newest Alcest albums, Mol, and I've listened to Astronoid in the past and enjoyed them. I'll get to work on the rest.

Listened to this one and it really caught me off guard with how STRAIGHT FUCKING ST00PID HEAVY it is, I dig this release a lot.

 

'Akudama' was a regular on my Spotify Daily Mixes so I'm glad the whole album lived up to that barn burner.

 

These are a bit too black metal. Very good but I think he is looking at the soft side of these bands and why I mentioned the bands I did. I am sure he will never complain about more music to check out though.

the last Lantlos & first Astronoid are sooooo good

 

fair! Alcest is v good! Deafhaven never really did it for me except for a few songs - excellent live band though

South American metal in general just hits different. Nobody does it quite like them.

 

I will def never complain, you are right too, these were a little too bm for me. There’s a fine line with it though, so I’d rather have plenty of options. Also, feel like after hearing one astronoid song I’m like, “yes this is v cool” ... but then every single one sounds the same unfortunately.

 

Colombian brutal-death? Fucking insane.

 

Not trying to start a rankings thread but there are at least 2 maybe 3 Sepultura records I'd put above Roots.

I heard it a couple times when it came out and liked it but like most stuff, I need to spend more time with it. Thanks for the reminder.

 

Also, there are some Soulfly albums I would put WAY above Sepultura albums.
