Their first album and then go from there. You cant go wrong with any of their albums imo.

Woah. I'm a pretty big Periphery hater but this shit goes hard. I never would've guessed they had it in them...

My sentiments exactly. They haven't put anything out I've liked in a while, but this is pretty good.

I would just start from the beginning. Their first album had Chris Barretto on vocals who went on to form Monuments and Ever Forthright. Pretty much all in the vein of prog metal. Periphery's earlier work is definitely much heavier but they might be returning to their roots on this album.

I never got into Periphery aside from a few songs and gave up after their second. Should I try again? Is there something I’m missing about this band?

If you aren't into progressive metal, it's going to be a hard sell no matter how nice you paint the picture.

  8. Personally, I'd tell people to start with their 2nd album or Juggernaut (my personal fav). First album is great, but it was mostly Misha's brainchild rather than a full band effort and Spencer's vocals were not as good as they got on later albums.

Also, official video for the new song

  9. The vocalist really makes or breaks it. Personally I can't stand his performances but there are instrumental versions of the albums in case you can't get past the vocals.

  10. That first album does have some classic djent riffs though ha. Sad I missed the tour when they were performing Racecar. That must have been pretty great to experience.

What has always stood out for me with this band is their mix of complex prog metal and more accessible popper sounds. It always has made them unique and fun to me, but I also understand that this isnt everyone's cup of tea. Depends on how you feel about all of that I suppose.

I guess I’m hit or miss with prog metal. For example, I’ve never been able to get into Animals As Leaders, but I absolutely love the prog elements Gojira includes. So perhaps I’m not a straight-up prog guy, but I do enjoy elements of it in different styles.

Speaking of Gojira, I’ve just been thinking of trying to discover more music in a similar vein to Gojira. If anyone has any recommendations, I’m all ears

As for progressive metal albums, nothing tops The Common Man’s Collapse for me yet. And that’s not even a straight up progressive metal album.

  16. They've got a new-ish release by the way, I wasn't aware!

  17. Periphery II is very easily their best imo. The first is good, but from my understanding, is basically just a collection of songs written by their guitarist over the many years prior to Periphery existing that their singer just kinda slapped vocals on, and it shows. Good riffs though, but II is just a much better showcase of all of the member’s talents. Definitely worth going back to but not a good starting point

I’d also recommend skipping the Juggernaut stuff and going straight to III

  20. Haha, I reeeeally really didn’t like those records at all. Whatever they were trying to do with those just didn’t work for me. Actually thought that was sorta consensus, looks like I’m in the minority here and didn’t even realize it

I was supposed to see them at California Deathfest a couple years back but they dropped. Hopefully I can see them soon, murky riffs for days.

By the way, on a side note, you have good taste in metal.

Lots of new stuff that I've been jamming lately. Think I'm getting into my normal groove of listening to current releases.

Holy shit, blackened doom with HM2 guitars? Fuckin YES:

Filthy ass death metal via Blood Harvest records comes out next week:

Canadian Death/doom from Caligari Records, not even on the archives yet. Unsettling and heavy as hell:

Lastly, ferocious German black metal that came out last month:

I hope these are enough to disturb you for one evening.

I'm likely the only person in the world, it seems, who really loves Spencer's vocals. Especially his cleans. His cleans are my favorite.
