For me, ATP is the Office, with higher highs. HE is Parks and Rec, with more consistency and feels like it will age a little better. Really like both records.
I don't know which I like better at this point, but HE immediately hooked me in and I fell in love with it almost instantly, where as ATP took a while to hit for me. The songs that really hit were immediate, but most of the album wasn't. Love love love both records though I've probably listened to this more than any other record that came out last year
My top four songs from ATP and HE would be: After the Party Midwestern States Lookers Your Wild Years My bottom four songs from ATP and HE would be: House on Fire The Bars Boy Blue Charlie's Army
Thank you! Wasn’t sure how it was going to be received since the love for ATP has been more outward than it has for Exile. Glad to see there wasn’t a lot of pushback! I have not seen Brooklyn so someone else will have to make that analogy haha.
Menzingers albums were always spotty for me, as is this one (the second half drags quite a bit), but the songs that hit me hurt like hell. also, funny to think like this but based on tone and themes i think this is more The Office, where the characters generally give off a stagnant vibe then eventually seem to start moving on, and ATP feels a bit more youthful, colorful and reckless like Parks & Rec.
Winding down after a productive day, listening to this with a bottle of Freakshow (Cabernet Sauvignon) and they compliment each other so well
wasn't here for the top 5 back in release week but here's mine (no order, only listened to OTIP onwards): Farewell Youth Lookers After the Party Telling Lies Gates (HM: Anna) Farewell Youth is just destroying me right now and it might've been my SOTY if i had listened to it when the album came out. also this band is weird for me in that i absolutely love the crap out of their last two albums but don't really care too much for the previous two. makes me anxious about going after the first two lol
As far as this record goes, my current top 5 are probably: (in no particular order) Anna Strawberry Mansion Last to Know Portland Strain Your Memory
This is my aoty. Front to back just solid poo. top 5 1. Can’t Stop Drinking 2. After the Party 3. America 4. Lookers 5. Last to Know
1. After The Party 2. Casey 3. Your Wild Years 4. Lookers 5. Anna HM: Obituaries, Mexican Guitars, America, Farewell Youth
1 Gates 2. After the Party 3. Mexican Guitars 4. Midwestern States 5. Lookers Best of the new bunch: Strain Your Memory, Farewell Youth, Anna Most overrated: Asshole (still like it a lot though) Most underrated: Black Mass
Song that sounds most like it came straight from American Idiot: Last to Know And yes that's a good thing
I heard it from the first listen and have thought it ever since. Even sounds like Billie Joe. Especially the "Promises were made on the altar in blood..." part.
Setlist from tonight: Mexican Guitars Transient Love Ava House Time Tables Hello Exile The Freaks I Can’t Seem To Tell London Drugs Lilith Avi Charlie’s Army Last To Know Sun Hotel Death or Glory (Clash Cover) Strain Your Memory Freedom Bridge Anna After The Party encore: Good Things
