It's wild when people think this is all Will's fault like the band didn't have any say in how they wanted the album to sound. I'm probably the biggest Yip stan around here though.
I only noticed the production on the first listen but it doesn't bother me anymore. This band can write a fucking song and I'm a huge fan of the pre-chorus. Who else could work a Vichy France reference in that well?
I enjoy both songs but they just feel like such Menzingers songs. Does that make sense? Like if you had a machine take all of their other albums and chew them up and spit out new songs, itd be these two. They aren’t bad by any means, I just feel like I’ve heard them already
that's how i felt about la dispute's record this year too, so I get it. I like these songs, but I'm ready to hear some Tom songs now
The songwriting is tight enough that I’m still engaged. The songs are also very much still in the ATP era of their sound, which works for me given how much I love that record. I do hope for more diversity and dynamics on the full album, though. I may have posted this already, but The Freaks and Cemetery’s Garden have me extremely excited for Tom’s songs in a way I never have been before.
Yeah I’m listening to the new one now and I feel like it has bits and pieces of their other songs but nothing directly borrowed. They are both, like, fine. Nothing more nothing less.
I keep thinking how No Penance would have made for such a great first single from this record. I realize it wasn’t a part of these sessions, but I’m weird and hate when great songs don’t appear on band’s full lengths.
I don't think it's super unusual for the lead singles to sound similar to a band's previous beloved songs.
Neither of these instantly grabbed me like Lookers did the last time around, but I really love both of these songs. They are true ear worms. I keep finding myself wanting to relisten to them both. October feels very far away!
I can definitely hear the weird mix, but I still love the song. Who would be a good producer for them? I know this is a long time ago now, but I loved the mix The Wonder Years had on Suburbia and Greatest Generation. It would be dope IMHO if the menzingers worked with Steve Evetts or someone like that. Also would be cool if they went back to Matt Allison from OTIP, but I digress. Looking forward to the record.
