I definitely like Yip's production more than most, but the vocal effect on Greg in these 2 songs isn't a favorite of mine. Especially since we have an album from 2 years ago that didn't do that and it sounded much, much better. The song still rules and this album has a very easy chance of being my AOTY even if the production is a step lower than it was on ATP.
This is a weird one where it sounds amazing on speakers or in the car but just doesn't translate as well to headphones, which is arguably the most important one (for me at least)
when y'all talk about not liking the production is it just the reverb on greg's vocals or are there other things? Because it was a little jarring I guess for me at first when Anna was released but now I think I really enjoy it, and everything else sounds great (especially the drums which is good because Yips earlier stuff all had v flat drums)
It’s one of those production choices that lends to full album listens, rather than one off singles, imo
Maybe it’s my speakers, but the vocal production didn’t really bother me. The reverb is pretty heavy and the vocals are set back further in the mix than I’d typically go for, but it didn’t impede my enjoyment of the song or anything.
As an opening track, it’s probably their weakest since Chamberlain Waits, but I did like the song and expect it to grow on me with repeated listens/full album context
It has a very tough group to go against, haha. Tellin' Lies is the best opening track to an album for me.
Lol and with that album it makes a ton of sense... but here.. with this band.. that relies so heavily on the story telling aspects of their lyrics... nah
Song rules, I am so excited for this album Those drums at the beginning!! Am definitely bummed they released the opener though
For sure. Hearing that song for the first time, especially after only hearing Lookers as a single, was an experience.
I should clarify that personally I like a lot of his albums and think he is super talented. I just don’t think the signature sound he developed works for this band. He reigned it in big time on ATP and it worked great.
Haven’t checked out this song yet, but I really didn’t like the production on Anna. I don’t normally have a problem with Yip’s production, I actually really enjoyed it on ATP
I can only speak from personal experience, but it's very often the exact opposite. I hear an album, or song, and go "huh, there's something about X I don't like" and then look at who produced it and then go "oh, that's why, because producer Y does ____ that I don't often like."
will yips vocal production is fucking baffling. i dont get it. why does he push them so low when they dont call for it
