I love me some Tom songs, Sculptors and Vandals is one of my absolute favorites. I was also friends with Tom’s cousin in college so I may have some slight bias.
Burn After Writing and Thick As Thieves will get good pops live, Ava House does pretty good too in terms of crowd energy and reaction. It is just so hard to indirectly but directly be compared to songs such as Asshole, ATP, In Remission, Tellin Lies, Lookers, Obituaries, & Casey which are live set staples and absolutely crush it live every time. I just love this band and seeing them live so much. I think I've seen them 7 or 8 times now ... with one more this Saturday and again in the fall. I'm just getting pumped thinking about all these songs live plus adding Anna in there with whatever else they'll play.
I actually got to see them debut boy blue last summer and i thought it had great energy from the crowd.
I've only seen them once and they were opening so it was a shorter set. I'm so stoked to see them headline finally.
I saw a notification pop up for the After the Party thread and I remember all the excitement leading up to that record drop and then when I saw that they were dropping a new record this year and we could do that all over again...let's just say I'm fucking excited.
Greg’s voice was more gritty/screamy on the first couple records and EP but over time as it smoothed out the two voices bear more resemblance to each other
I think the distinction between Greg and Tom is the most clear on ATP, but even then two of my friends had no idea the vocals were split until I told them.
I was always shocked that people couldn't tell the difference. I don't mean that in a disparaging way -- I have that problem with other bands who have two singers -- but Greg and Tom's voices have always struck me as SO different from one another.
Greg definitely has the upper hand when it comes to comparing their songs, However, I think “The Freaks” (Tom song) might be the best song they ever wrote ♂️
The lyrical content has been their biggest difference to me. Greg's is more storytelling and Tom's is abstract/metaphorical.
even after I learned there were two singers I could never tell them apart and would constantly confuse them haha
“I can’t seem to tell if it’s my head or the earth that’s spinning around” really sums up my 4 years in college on a physical and emotional level.
I've honestly known there were two singers since OTIP and have not once been able to tell them apart. Even live I think they sound the same. Can't quite find differences in their delivery.
Glad other people couldn't tell and I wasn't alone in that, LOL! When Greg really lets loose, then I can tell but when he sits in that comfortable register, it gets blurry. I just figured my hearing was wrecked from all the shows.
Rented World was my first Menzingers album and I also had NO CLUE there were two singers until some nice people on this very website tipped me off.
What are we thinking ratio wise of Tom/Greg on this one? Also still boggles my mind people can’t heae the difference between them haha
It took me a while to realise there were two singers as well - I just assumed for a while it was one guy with two slightly different registers. It helps that their voices are kind of similar and they don't do that many duets unlike, say, blink or Less Than Jake. I've decided that Anna is a slow-burner rather than a barnstormer, but I love it now.
