If it is a calculated formula, that formula hits me right in the gut every time, so at least it works.
I have no issues with it either. I’m just saying that he’s been writing like this for a while and it’s odd to me that people seem to be bringing it up now. Like, what did people expect?
Okay so I got into The Menzingers on After the Party. Can someone point me to a Greg song and then a Tom song? I guess I always just assumed Greg sang all of them?
I don’t care if the songwriting/lyrics stay the same, that’s what I love most about the band. I would like to see them branch out a little sonically though. Gimme more stuff like Black Mass on this album.
Greg: Tellin Lies, ATP, Lookers, Your Wild Years, Black Mass, Midwestern Sates, Charlie's Army, Bad Catholics, Livin Ain't Easy Tom: Thick as Thieves, House on Fire, Boy Blue, The Bars
Agreed! I'm in love with his writing It's very Brian Fallon-esque and the time Brian tried to change it up we got Get Hurt and I just don't need it. Greg will use similar tropes and I have no issue with it if it continues to be absolutely stunning while also putting a grin on my face in the same song.
Wow! So subtle! I can definitely hear when I'm listening for it but I wouldn't have (and didn't) notice without it being pointed out.
jamming the song non stop. this albums gonna be unreal good. fuck, i just need it here now, the weathers perfect for it. listening to rented world now, still better than people give it credit for i think.
I didn’t realize both guys sang until I saw them live for the first time. I hear them both very distinctly now, but I listened for more years than I care to admit before I realized it.
Tom and Greg also format their lyrics differently in the liner notes for OTIP. Tom's are separate by line and Greg's are paragraph style. I always thought that was really cool and wished they had kept that up.
Yeah I also never realised they had two singers. Almost wish I didn't find out because now I hear Greg songs and Tom songs. I only learned they had two vocalists after Rented World. I posted my song rankings and someone complained I had all the Tom songs at the bottom. To be honest I think I'd have the Tom songs at the bottom of After the Party too. However I will say 1. The Tom songs balance their albums out and stop the Greg songs from becoming overbearing; 2. I like the Tom songs on CW and OTIP just as much as (most of) the Greg ones.
I think it's a lot more obvious on most songs when you know, but my introduction to the band was OTIP and I still find it hard to believe Tom sings Burn After Writing lol. Maybe if those first 3 songs on OTIP weren't my introduction to the band I would have realised sooner
I always try to make sure I give Tom all the extra support I can live because there is definitely a difference of energy and reaction from the crowd between their songs. Both are awesome ... but I do admit I like Greg's writing and vocals exceptionally more (and I don't think this is a totally minority opinion). It isn't a shot at Tom, it has more to do with Greg being quite spectacular.
Yeah I didn't mean to be a dick, Tom has some great tunes and I am sure it would be kinda weird in a live setting for him
