I don’t think it’s an outright “bad” track but, like most of this record, it feels like they’re on autopilot. A lot of the songs sound like vaguely familiar takes on songs they’ve already wrote, and sort of plod along.
This perfectly summarizes my take on this album as a whole in their discography. It's a perfectly competent album from them with some standout tracks, but the bulk of it (even within those standout tracks) touches on a lot of what they've done before...especially after putting out three previous albums in their discography that are at least 9 out of 10s to me personally (Chamberlain, OTIP, and ATP). Not that it's entirely a bad thing because they have a formula that works well for me, but I'd like to see them get out of their lane a bit. Even if it leads to mixed results.
Can we start a head to head chorus.fm band lyric tournament? First up: America vs. Teenage Satellites
i think thats generally true, that this is a less good take on after the party. i dont think its bad, but i rarely return to it
rivers cuomo a bad lyrisict? i must live in another reality from what i can see lyrics was always the offsprings most consistent strength
I feel Rihanna I'm feeling Lana I feel Nirvana So you can fuck off more conviction than anything from that song thanks
https://oxfordpennant.com/collections/the-menzingers/ Take all my money. Got the After the Party banner.
I feel like I was always destined to not really click with most of this album - ATP blew me away because I was turning 30 the year it came out and it just said out loud everything I was feeling, even before I knew how to put those thoughts into words. Over time, I have come to prefer the "From Exile" version of this album a lot - besides America I think every other song is better on that variant.
I'm gutted that Oxford Pennant is not Oxford (UK) Because I really want those pins but shipping is $20 on top of cost
Absolutely. Every time I see any of the Wonder Years or Aaron West stuff I think the same. My house would be covered if shipping wasn't such an added expense
Yea we have a few TWY stuff. Maybe they could work something out if you guys do a group order to one address and then one person can mail the stuff to each person. The stuff is top quality. Really no other band merch from the states is of this quality. So may be worth a one time shot.
yeah it's weird seeing people hate on America About the only thing I can complain about is they retread some of the same lyrical ground as Tellin' Lies but that's, like, two lines of the song The rest is both one of the catchiest and most scathing songs they've ever written
Saw them play a one-off last night. They ripped through 19 songs in 75 minutes. First time since pre-COVID that thing got intense in the pit. Thank god for Tom songs because felt like every Greg song was insane.
Almost went last minute yesterday but the venue is almost 3 hours from us. Always feels like Menzingers go on late as it is so we decided the drive home wasn't going to be worth it. Sounds like it was a great time though
Yea they went on at 10…should have been on at 9:30 but the show started 30 minutes late. Done at 11:15. You know what you’re getting with them. They always play the staples plus switch up the deep cuts. Thought we may get an OTIP preview. Glad we didn’t. Prefer the variety. Aaron West and the Roaring Twenties opened and they brought the full band, including horns. First time seeing that and they just seemed thrilled to be there. Lots of good energy from both bands.
I sometimes feel bad because it’s pretty clear Greg songs typically get the larger pop from the crowd. So I always try to give Tom some extra love for his songs haha
