Last album was great. The title track? Ultraviolet? Nobody stays? Come on heartache? Great songs. I will admit though, it took a bit for me to come around on it.

ATP was their peak for me. Adore that record.
Everything since has been good, not great.

This is same category. Will listen to it a lot but not in love. Lyrically just doesn’t hit as hard. Also I’m old a shit. Maybe it’s me.

Same boat here, save for a few really great songs on HE and SOIWT. I do absolutely love From Exile, though. They really suit that style.

I think I prefer Hello Exile to ATP.

Really solid song! Always a good day with new menzos.

Some Of It Was True has a lot of fantastic songs. Hope Is A Dangerous Little Thing, There's No Place I'm This World For Me, Some Of It Was True, Try, Come On Heartache, Ultraviolet are all great. And thats basically the first two thirds of the record.

Didn't like the last album that much, I like this song more than Nobody's Heroes (which I didn't mind), but they aren't troubling top-tier Menzos. Agree with the comment on Greg's lyrics, they feel a bit loose these days, maybe something changed since the solo album release?

Really like this single. I don’t love it the same way I’ve loved other work of theirs, but I am encouraged by Jason’s early review.

They are almost victims of their own success with their early work. “After The Party” from front to back is one of my five favorite records from the last 10 years. It’s not a fair fight to always expect new work to hit you like it did at a certain point in your life. Hoping this hits closer though.

Also, shoutout to all the people who pointed out the WWWY comps. I was so excited to post about them and realized dozens of people beat me to the punch. This is why this forum rules.

kinda funny that the single from the last one was 'come on heartache, don't hurt me no more.'

the only songs i really liked on the last album were the closing duo, which is funny because everyone seemed to think the penultimate was the worst one, despite it having an actual pulse to it. i still kinda felt like both would have been b tier songs on their other albums though

Last album completely loses me after Ultraviolet

I’ve loved everything they’ve ever done except Hello Exile, which still has quite a few songs I really enjoy. These new songs are pretty much what I expect from them and I can’t complain. Excited for them to still be releasing new music and hopefully touring this fall.

Hello Exile has become one of the quintessential fall albums for me.

I’m sort of the same way, but that’s still 7 great songs. The back half of SOIWT is probably my least favorite stretch in their discography, but I don’t dislike it.

ultraviolet is good too i forgot about that song

i liked hello exile a lot when it came out though, that album has a little more texture to it that i think helps kept it a bit fresh even though everyone said it was them going stale lol. its not as consistent as i used to think but it has a bunch of their best songs on it

Lessons in the Abuse - the forgotten debut that only kind of counts
Hold On Dodge - okay here we go
Chamberlain Waits - sophomore level up classic
On the Impossible Past - perfects their sound. Unimpeachable.
Rented World - the follow up with more variety but less magic
After the Party - back to the sound they perfected and what do you know a second all time classic
Hello Exile - the dustier, road weary come down
Some of it was True - the veteran move to heartland

That's how I view the band's work. And I love it all. I legitimately have a playlist with every song they've put out and I'll let it shuffle for hours.

This is a pretty perfect description. Band really can do no wrong though I wish we got more of the experimentation they did with Rented World.

This is EXACTLY it. Each of those albums has that feel and place and all are valuable in their own way, for their own time or event.

They have no bad albums or even “fine” albums - it’s simply very good to great to excellent to one (or two!) of the best records this scene has ever produced.

Is "Nice Things" not the agreed-upon best Tom song? If not, why not?

I also love "Bad Things" (and Try and Portland and Last to Know and Nobody Stays and Boy Blue)
