It reminds me more of pre-AI stuff. The Bars gives me Warning vibes, Tellin' Lies and Charlie's Army don't sound unlike some of the songs on Nimrod
I realize this is a very unpopular opinion, but I tried listening to OTIP earlier and was still pretty bored. I can't get enough of this album though. Crazy how much their songwriting has improved (imo)
Thick As Thieves might be my favorite Tom song of the discography, but I still have the rest of the album to get through
I didn't listen to bad catholics until the record came out, its probably my favorite on here.. that second verse about your new husband with a baby on the way paints such a vivid picture
So happy you guys did this. Can't wait to listen. The Jason/Thomas team is back together and it feels so right.
Tellin Lies sounds more like Bouncing Souls than Green Day to me but yeah the Green Day vibes are heavy throughout, especially on Boy Blue and Charlie's Army
Now that it's getting mentioned I'm definitely getting Bouncing Souls vibes which would explain even more why I'm so head over heels for this
"Charlie's Army" feels like the Menzingers' take on a Lookout! Records/90s-style pop-punk song. Lyrically, anyway. Feels like something the Queers or Mr. T Experience would have written... Or Weston, even.
2nd time through, even better. Really searching for the moments when Greg conjures up a scream like the old days, e.g. end of Charlie's Army, Your Wild Years.
Summer Vacation is one of my favorite records. I could see it if you "beef" (idk?) the guitars more. Like, Charlie's Army sound like it's standard tuning not much crunch. That's why I get vintage '50's vibes. But I can see your point.
Does anyone know why some of the songs have alternative titles? I've seen a lot of reviews use "20's (Tellin' Lies)", "Cobra Boy Blue" and "Wings (Your Wild Years)" I think this website's fine review uses those titles too.
My top 3 from this are all Tom songs. As a ridiculous Greg fanboy, I never thought I'd say that, but he fucking crushed it on this one. His voice has never sounded better.
