Exactly what I was getting at when I said poorly written. Seems like the guy has never even heard their older stuff and just categorized them as gruff punks. Still cool that the Times gave them that much print and some praise though.
I'm assuming a lot of them have it since they sent it out to the record stores they're doing in stores at already
I also have it. (then again i went to the vintage vinyl instore yesterday) Spoilers for people who don't want to know the acoustic show setlist I also took bootlegs with me and my buddy singing in the background of them playing Midwestern States, The Bars, House on Fire, Lookers, and Black Mass
the full acoustic show setlist was: Bad Catholics Midwestern States Burn After Writing The Bars Good Things House on Fire I Don't Want to Be An Asshole Anymore Black Mass Gates Lookers
First listen didn't blow me away but I'm on my third listen today and it's only half five. Really enjoying this. Not sure it's OTIP level, but it's still fantastic and a truly great record. Every song has moments that either suck you in emotionally or lodge themselves in your head.
I don't think I've ever read a more factually incorrect statement in the New York Times than : "the Menzingers, a shaggy punk band from Scranton, Pa., that for more than a decade has been snotty but not wistful, driven and not much for the rearview mirror." No, like those things you are saying they aren't are EXACTLY what they've always been.
I was the biggest yip hater for years but I roll my eyes anytime people act like he's still bad these days
How does the closer compare to Freedom Bridge? That song is one of my favorite closers ever... Also, does anyone know why they play so many tracks off OTIP live but not that one?
Yeah so I love this thing, my high expectations were blown right away. Current favorite lyric: "We'll regret 'em when we're dead and sober, but we're still breathing and the party ain't over"
Freedom Bridge FEELS like a closer to me. I love that song. I also love Livin' Ain't Easy and lyrically it's awesome, it just doesn't FEEL like it is the closer of the album if you know what I mean? It's not a big issue whatsoever!
I think my favorite track on this is Livin' Ain't Easy, and then Black Mass probably. That song just crushes me.
One problem I have with the album is I find myself wishing Boy Blue went straight into Your Wild Years. Not sure if that's because I don't really like Bad Catholics in that spot or because it's one of my least favorite on the record.
I love Bad Catholics it was probably my favorite of the singles but it definitely stands out from the rest of the album like a sore thumb. I think it shows that it was originally gonna be on a split instead of the actual album because it kind of seems wedged in there.
