Really stoked for this record! 2/2 on the tracks absolutely killing it so far... "Lookers" is the best song they've ever written.
That's a bold statement, but I can't say I completely disagree. It's definitely up there with the greats in their catalogue.
I think I would say that I am looking forward to it more than Christmas. If I want something I buy it or save for it since I'm on my own. My parents are in Cleveland as well, so while I like seeing them it happens many times during the year haha.
I'm with you on the buying myself things that I want throughout the year thing. People tell me I'm tough to shop for because of that. I moved to Charleston, SC about a year and a half ago and my parents live in Pittsburgh, PA. They usually buy me a plane ticket home for a gift. For me I think the new record has to win out. Christmas lasts for like 2 days, but this record will last me at least through 2017 haha.
Lookers is classic menz but both are great. This band has such better singles than any others in the genre IMO
As someone who thinks Lookers is one of their better songs released in their career thus far, I am surprised some have to come around to it being better than Bad Catholics. That's not so much an indictment on Bad Catholics as much as it is a nod to Lookers haha.
When I first heard it I just kind of thought it was a standard real good Menzos song and BC blew me away. Now Lookers has caught up to BC and theyre 2 of my favorite songs the band has made.
This seems like a band I should be into but it never clicks, to me they sound like a less good Gaslight Anthem. Weren't these guys previously a lot harder?
This record is going to be so damn good. It's going to demand repeat listens, based on what people are saying though. I think it'll be great on the first spin, but only get better with time. 51 days to go....
Is it farfetched to believe that if this record was set to be released back in 1775 that this statement would have been a thing? Haha
Continuously dumbfounded by this band being compared to Gaslight. They are my two favorite artists of all time and I hear no similarities outside of some broad lyrical subjects, and even then they express them in largely different ways.
I agree, but I also can understand it. The two bands occupy a similar space in terms of nostalgia/"americana" style lyrics and their general sounds. However, if you dig in at all, I think they are pretty different. Multiple vocalists being the big one. I think the Menzingers lean more to the punk style than straight rock 'n roll sound of Gaslight. I also think Menzinger lyrics tend to vary in subject matter a little more than Gaslight. Both bands have some really good lyrics, so it's really just a matter of preference.
oh m gee i am moving to philly and live a block away from a venue they just announced an acoustic show at, so stoked to see that!
I got into both bands around the same time so they'll always be linked for me. Probably listened to Handwritten and OTIP more than every other album combined in 2012. I agree that they're very different sonically, but both bands are excellent at using their songs to tell stories -- very vivid imagery.
