everything of yip i hear makes it sound like he's a good producer but not a very good engineer

don't the two kind of go hand in hand though? if you can't make good decisions about what sounds good during the recording process, the result won't sound good no matter who does the mixing

unless you're referring to producer as "co-writer / feedback person" which makes sense but also such people should not be making records

i'm not jake so i don't know the exacts but i feel like this is what i've picked up on: production is helping shape songs, which potentially encapsulate some engineering as well. yip doesn't make things sound great but his feedback and suggestions help make better more interesting records

huh, i guess that makes sense but also i feel like producers should get writing credits then if their main purpose is to help with writing and wrapping up writing. i've always thought of "producer" as "person who records the album" and the person who records the album dictates a lot more of how the album ends up sounding than whoever mixes it, imo

    No, no release date yet.

I wonder if there are still some minor details being sorted out, or how exactly they want to attack the marketing campaign because they told me "soon" on album details. However, that's been said for a while now so I'm not putting much stock in that.

I think with the sound of the songs released/played, the producer choice, and the carefulness of releasing details, I am getting the sense that this band is going for it this time around. I think this is them taking a shot at hitting a bigger audience. I really hope it works for them.

Edit: per Jason in the supporter's forum, he is thinking end of September for a release date.

Thanks for the update, man. I appreciate it.

I'm stoked at the thought of it coming out soon. I'm a little bummed because I totally wasn't thinking about it and now I listened to Lookers again and now I can't stop thinking about how much I want this record haha.

I really hope this is huge for them. They deserve it. Great guys in a great band.

lots of producers have other people handle engineering duties. many take care of engineering themselves though. just depends. when the producer isnt engineering the engineer acts as the producers hands and ears when it comes to things like mic choice and placement and recording tactics, etc.

A producer is someone who both engineers and makes decisions on instrumentation and song writing choices at times.

If someone is listed as an engineer they pretty much just set up mics and hit record when the band says they are ready.

Mixing is a different animal but can almost be just as important as production in the final product.

recording will always be more important than mixing because you can't mix something well if it wasnt recorded well

yea i suppose this is true but something that is recorded really well can also be ruined by terrible mixing lol. the two do kind of go hand in hand, the key to a record sounding good is a strong performance on both ends.

well if something is recorded really well mixing becomes much easier. shit usually gets fucked up in mastering these days

No problem. I forget which bands specifically he said, but one other thing I was told was that they were listening to a lot of '80s music while writing and that it had an impact on the album; not so much in the sound, but rather some of the tempos and pacing.

Is the release of the single without a (official) release announcement an indication that the album might not be coming until early next year? It doesn't seem like how most bands do it these days-- unless you're Brand New. Who knows when that thing is coming.

Jason said this week in the supporter's forum that he believes the release date to be towards the end of September.

sounds like the point of the supporter's forum, to have information to go outside of the supporter's forum!
    thanks for saving my money!

I think he also said it on the last episode of Encore, so it's not exclusive to supporters.

I'm still waiting for the lifetime supporter membership before I go that route.

That would be a short window for preorders. not complaining though.

I didn't get the sense it was posted in a manner to be kept secret. That would be a little weird to keep that kind of detail, at this time away from other fans of the band.

I just did the full year subscription back around the time of launch. It was a pretty good value for the new site, plus the old AP was a good tool for finding new bands back when I was younger and new to the scene. It was kind of a way to pay it back as a thank you.

That's the thing, is that we already quickly approaching September. Jason was just saying that's when he thinks it will drop. He didn't add any support like, " based on what I heard" etc.. Literally just answered someone's question saying he thinks it will be towards the end of September. No other context was given haha.

I'm all for supporting the site, and I brought the lifetime membership up to Jason back when Chorus was first starting and he seemed interested in exploring that, but I prefer not to sign up for any kind of "subscription".

Back to The Menzingers, "Lookers" is a fantastic song, and I'm really excited for this record. I didn't get into them until RW, but I love that album and OtIP.

Always glad to have new fans come aboard. It doesn't matter when or how. Just as long as you did!

Have you listened to Chamberlain Waits, Hold On Dodge, the Bouncing Souls split, or their debut album? There are a few other things out there as well to dive into if you want to tide yourself over until the new record haha.

It's actually not a bad place to be in if you (the royal you) are a new fan. They don't play a ton of the older stuff, so it's not like you are missing out on a ton of live cuts. Maybe I Was Born or Irish Goodbyes. I think the Shakes here and there. You basically get a bunch of new music before the actual new music. I am actually jealous of the new fan going through that stuff for the first time in lieu of the new record.

Someone in the Bayside/Menzingers tour thread mentioned that he spoke to some of the guys and they confirmed what I was told about a spring tour next year. However, they told him early 2017 for the record release. That goes against what I pulled from the supporter's forum. Also, when I was at the show I only asked for when album details would be announced, not the release date. I was told "soon" for the details. I did think there was a chance this got delayed based on the way things have gone to this point, so I am not totally surprised.
