After the party is my second favorite. I just feel like the third verse pales compared to the first two. It’s short and meh. That chorus tho
After The Party - can't explain the feeling I get when this song comes. Always the urge to blast it Your Wild Years - favorite lyrics on the album House on Fire/Boy Blue - Tom stepped it up on this album. Love these songs
Aside from "The Bars" (still not sold on it), Tom's songs on this album are his best since OTIP. I too feel bad for the guy sometimes because he does have some high quality songs, but Greg's ability to tell a story and conjure up imagery is incredible. "Building castles of cans and bottles/drinking like they do in novels." is a great line.
Boy Blue is the only song that grew off me on th is thing but every Tom song slaps, for the first time ever. He's extremely necessary for why his band is special though he may not have the huge hits.
My top 3 are After The Party, Your Wild Years, and Lookers. Tom's songs are really good, but they suffer from being overshadowed by Greg's songwriting.
For all intents and purposes, "Lookers" is pretty much a perfect song. I still find it to be as infectious and catchy as I did when I first heard it.
literally any song off OTIP can hold argument for their best song. I have a new favorite every time I listen to that album.
Also, I like "In Remission" as much as the next person, but they seem to close almost every single show with it. It's pretty much become their "Makedamnsure". I'd like to see them do something new for a while.
"due to some constructive criticism by poster RobJGolde from verse.am, we have removed In Remission from all our shows for the forseeable future. we're replacing it with a cover of wonderwall by oasis. we'll occasionally switch it up by replacing that with a cover of smells like teen spirit by the foo fighters in the hope that wonderwall hasn't gotten old yet"
Haha touche...wasn't trying to take a crack at the band or tell them what to do, obviously. I meant to open up a discussion of what other songs of theirs would make good set-closers. Could've phrased it better.
was just joshing hahaha wasn't criticising your post at all! it's a very fair point, it's just that it made me imagine a world where the menzingers started covering incredibly overplayed songs as closers and I couldn't stop myself from vigorously slapping my hands on the keyboard
All good, I got a good chuckle out of it I could def. see them getting hammered and covering one of those songs just for kicks
I literally hate every Tom song on this and he muddies what would've easily been a top 3 record for me otherwise. (I love all of Greg's songs). The difference in quality lyrically, melodically, structurally is so huge imo Also Casey is their best song
I feel like In Remission is a perfect set closer. I do enjoy when bands have a consistent closer such as Dammit or the Backseat. I’m into it!
