I saw these legends live back in March 2020. It was the final show of their Australian tour, here in Melbourne. It was also just before we went into lockdown over here. They were meant to be heading over to New Zealand next, but had to head home after this show in fear of getting trapped in Aus/NZ. The gig was absolutely WILD! So much uncertainty and tension in the air. Everybody at that show treated it like a grand finale to whatever had been and a fearful welcome to whatever the hell was about to come. Even the band were laughing at how hard the crowd was going. It was honestly epic. I'll always remember that show. One heck of a way to sign off the pre-covid world. Then the Gregor Barnett solo album came out and has some great songs and a cool vibe. So my hype for this new album has been huge. But I gotta say - it's a 0/3 for me. Maybe a 1/3 because Hope is a Dangerous Little Thing gets stuck in my head. But not in a good way. It all feels just a little cheesy? "I detest your pitter patter in my chest"? Yeesh. This song may have a Tom Petty riff, but it has some real "my first country/folk song" lyrics. Sorry about the long ramble here, but I'm almost hoping someone will reply with a shining perspective that will suddenly change my mind! Slap my ears into the correct frequency! Reprogram my brain to decode the genius.
Hope the new tracks work better for you in the context of the album. I really like them although they don't quite reach the amazing heights of Lookers or In Remission or Gates (their lead singles are out of control). I was at the show before yours in Adelaide. Fantastic show, so much fun. I can remember the band saying how much they liked Australia and someone in the crowd responded "That's good cos I think you're about to get stuck here!" Adelaide was in lockdown a few days later. Still not sure how I didn't catch covid at that show.
I think we are all waiting for some fast songs to be released that will stir up the crowds on future tours.
