Drive thru is definitely for small orders/quick service. Larger, more intricate orders, are to be placed inside.
I agree to an extent. if I have my kids in the car and I'm just picking up food to go I'm not getting them out of the car if I can avoid it. If I'm by myself and I have an intricate order, or am ordering alot of food for multiple people then I'll go inside.
What's really important is all drive thrus need to have an exit so if I pull up to the menu and don't see anything I want to order I can leave without waiting behind the people getting food
This is what I was getting at. I understand that there are times when something goes wrong in the kitchen and it can cause a delay, but if you have a lot of food for a lot of people and the reason there is a delay is because it takes a long time to prepare the large order, then it's polite to go inside and order and wait in the lobby and take it to go. If you have kids and you order yours and their meals and it doesn't take much longer than others order without kids, then by all means keep using the drivethru because that's what's easier on everyone and doesn't cause a backup and i understand getting kids in and out is a process and stressful and that's not fair to you. also it's partially the drive thru employees fault as well to not ask the vehicle causing the delay with their large order to pull through to one of the pick up spaces and run it out to them when it's ready so they can get everyone else through the line faster.
if there's two lines typically the far right side doesn't have a barrier to prevent you from exiting. if you are undecided use that lane. for single lane drive thurs there definitely needs to be an exit back into the parking lot.
Also this seems like the best solution to me. I will acknowledge that I work at a restaurant and customers are fucking nuts and you can't anticipate when you have someone who throws a fit that they get their order later because "they ordered first and that's not fair" like ma'am please consider the logistics of your 47 orders of scrambled eggs with cheese we are doing our best here That happened by the way
I have never pulled up to a drive thru and not found something on the menu I wanted. If it's a new fast food chain I'd never been to, I'll just go inside.
I rarely know what I want when I pull up. I know what I want when I've stared at the menu for a couple minutes and sometimes nothing sounds good
Huh. Interesting. Presumably you're a drive thru of a place you know, so for me it's a quick decision.
i do. it's generally the same thing at every single location across our entire country. even if you use the excuse that you want to try something new, you already know whats on the menu, it's not a surprise.
ALSO, it's a drive thru! Presumably you have to drive to get there. Use that time spent driving to think of what you want to order! Manage your time more efficiently.
No I need to see all the options laid out in front of me and consider each of them one at a time. Even if I've been there 100 times. The order taker should also know that when I'm ready I will start speaking, so there is no need to keep informing me that they will "take my order whenever I'm ready"
you want a restaurant experience at a fast food place's drivethru? Sorry, no. You can either have the time of looking over the menu inside or you can have the convenience of going through the drivethru. You don't get both. You don't get that luxury. that's a social cue that actually means "hurry the fuck up, guy."
these aren't obscure! And these aren't "my rules!!" "My rules" are societal norms and laws. My rules have one guiding principle: to create a polite society where no one's decision or actions greatly inconvenience another's. That seems pretty fair to me!
I think if you are at the menu for 3 minutes or less you are in the clear. You don't need to know exactly what you want when you get there. Just a general idea
