Alamo is showing the first one this week. Grabbing a ticket since I was too young to see it in theaters when it came out. Should be fun.

I don't trust anyone that saw the first one in theaters and didn't try to run on a wall immediately after leaving the theater

Happy to report that the original holds all the way up.

I saw the original in theaters. It is really remarkable that it works since the film is almost all exposition in world building for over an hour. The Wachowski's really captured a sense of cool that is instantly recognizable as late Nineties.

There are a lot of little nitpicks for people who want them, but the one I always find funny is that a group of people who are trying to covertly infiltrate the Matrix wear the loudest clothing imaginable.

Rewatched the trilogy over the past few days and I may have missed it but I don't remember them ever mentioning what humanity's plan to defeat the machines was before/besides The One. Like, tons of characters think Morpheus and others are crazy for thinking there's some messiah, but it's not like anyone else had any other bright ideas. What purpose did they even have to going in The Matrix before Neo? First they recruit him, then every subsequent trip is for something related to him. What were they doing before that?

Regardless, the first one holds up incredibly well and the sequels are perfectly average. By no means the disasters that people love to act like they are

The sequels muddy the intent of the first film, which is a basic Hero's Journey. When Neo can defeat the agents with ease at the beginning of Reloaded, what are the stakes? They start doing what Dragonball Z always did with Goku, which is put Neo in a situation where he can't help right away to add dramatic stakes.

However, when we look back, they are at least interesting failures. The Star Wars prequels or the Matrix sequels or the Schumacher Batman films or Michael Bay's movies at least have a voice, unlike the heavily producer-controlled mega-franchises that exist now.

The stakes in the sequels are out in the real world where Neo isn’t a god and can’t just easily solve the problem of Zion being destroyed by the machines.

Plus even in the matrix he can do crazy shit but still has no clue what he needs to do.

The Wachowski's didn't know what to do either.

It is a shame that they ended up changing Tank's character to the guy from Oz. All of those ancillary characters on the ship in the first movie were interesting in their own ways.

the sequels muddying the heroes journey is why they're so interesting!!!! who needs another fucking chosen one narrative?

I know it's not what you're saying, but this reads like you're just equating terrible movies with "having a voice". I mean, sure, it does, and it's screaming in pain.

Don't get me wrong, I like some garbage films too.

I've always felt that The Matrix has one of the greatest first acts in any Hollywood movie. Truly masterful way of getting everyone on-board with such an out there concept fairly quickly

It has one of the greatest second and third acts of all time too tbh. Really it's one of the greatest movies of all time tbh.
