I like to think that it’s just a new version of Morpheus since it’s a new rebooted Matrix and since the old one died in the game, a new one had to take his place

It’s wild to me that Disney/Marvel/Star Wars has convinced a segment of online fandom that digitally recreating an actor for nostalgia is better than the less aesthetically (and ethically) gross practice of… simply casting someone else.

If they really kept both Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss for prominent roles, but replaced Laurence Fishburne and left him out completely, the surface level optics could end up feeling a bit off, depending on how much sense it makes narratively. (Though, not something that can be judged quite yet!) But, regardless, I’m happy to have every major human character look… I dunno, human? lol.

I don't find the practice gross, frankly, but it also depends on how it's used.

I feel uncomfortable about the whole Tarkin thing in Rogue One, even though aesthetically I didn't have that much of an issue with it and I also recognize his estate clearly was okay with the whole thing, but it is not a practice I would like to see happen on the regular. We shouldn't be trying to recreate dead people, period.

There's a difference between that and say, de-aging Michael Douglas to show him as a younger Hank Pym, as an example. I get that some people don't think it looks natural, but I didn't have any problem with it, and I don't think either take is wrong. It's a matter of preference and perspective, which is fine.

For the purposes of consistency, and if Laurence Fishburne really wanted to take part in the film, and if it was absolutely necessary for Morpheus to look exactly as he did when the original movies took place, I don't see why it's an issue to use the technology that's available, because I personally don't have a problem with it. Others might. That's fine.

Anyway, all of this doesn't really matter, because for all we know, Yahya may not be playing Morpheus at all and this whole conversation is absolutely irrelevant.

Or, and I just actually thought this, what if he is Morpheus, but not THE Morpheus? Like a symbolic taking of the name? Assuming Morpheus Morpheus is dead.

Speaking of The Irishman, that film was a good hour too long

I find the uncanny valley of it all super distracting. And, I don’t like that it keeps younger actors from getting a shot at the role.

Mostly, it makes me uncomfortable that Disney, with their chokehold on Hollywood and history of unethical business practices, has made it such a casual, prevalent part of their filmmaking strategy. I always think about how, shortly after Rogue One came out, Donald Glover joked about how they had a digital scan of him to use for different stuff and could do whatever they wanted with it. Who knows what kinda things they sneak into contracts now with actors who want a shot to play in the Marvel Studio playground.

It can certainly be used in artistically meaningful ways, but just kinda on principle for the above reasons, I just… can’t vibe with it.

I don’t have any issue with the morpheus thing, for all we know he has a cameo at the end where he shuts off the simulation or something wild lol

Anyways, I’m happy to use this movie as my excuse to finally watch the sequels, and I’m happy to (pandemic permitting) see some Wachowski gonzo blockbuster goodness on the big screen.

When I saw Rogue One in the theater, I didn't know for sure Peter Cushing was dead. I didn't peg that he was cg in the movie until I looked it up after. I feel like I'm alone in that here lol but cg hasn't bothered me too much

I'd be surprised if Fishburne doesn't have at least a cameo. Seems like a strange choice to bring back everyone but him

Rewatched Revolutions today, still wasn't into it, but looking forward to watching the rest of the Wachowskis stuff and listening to the Blank Check episodes

This is all completely fair. I'm not for just using it willy-nilly, but just where it makes sense to do so.

Also to be fair, the moments I'm thinking about are moments that are barely present in the movies they're in, so I have no idea how a CGI younger Fishburne would hold up over the course of an entire film.

  15. I should rewatch the trilogy now that I'm trans; I wonder if that allegory holds throughout

The worst part about the Tarkin thing is that the actor who was doing his voice and who was actually on set literally looks pretty close to a young Peter Cushing. They could have just had him play the part in old age makeup and it would've been way better.

Regarding all the talk about Keanu looking too John Wick, didn’t Covid push filming back so he shot this back to back with John Wick 4? He probably wasn’t allowed to cut his hair, and as we saw in Bill and Ted…dude looks weird without facial hair. I don’t think it’s a big deal
