I cannot wait to see the reactions to Equus 3. The singles are more representative of the album, but if they had dropped this track first, the hype would have been almost too intense.

Sorry for all the posts. I'm like...chattering from excitement, lol. I am so stoked for people to listen.

It’s a feat, honestly. They avoided all their worst tendencies and managed to craft an entire album of “short” songs that not only have some of Cedric’s best (read: sensible) lyrics and vocals, but it shows extreme restraint while still managing to pack a lot into each song and still very much feels like The Mars Volta. As my friend jokingly put it, it’s “the good version of Octahedron.” But even that is doing it a disservice imo.

Tourmaline is everything I would have wanted out of Octa.

Any standout drumming moments? Are the singles good representatives of the album?

Really enjoy the drums throughout all of it. It carries on with that “Caribbean” vibe from Blacklight shine.
As far as the singles, I’d say Blacklight shine is the closest to the rest of the album.

So pumped to see the reviews/reactions to this. Streamlined Volta sounds extremely up my alley.

plenty of it sounded more like streamlined nocturniquet to me on first listen

for sure a really interesting and nicely textured album. was a bit unsure about the songwriting for the first half, seemed a bit unmemorable, but the second half really picks up massively. Cerulea through Palm Full is absolutely one of their best runs, what a powerful sequence

I suspect many people will dislike this track, but I love Collapsible Shoulders and it currently has me swaying in my chair.

Flash Burns is easily the highlight after a couple listens. Unsure how I feel about this as a whole, or whether I'd put it above the Antemasque LP, but I admit there's probably a lot that will take time to explore and appreciate.

I totally get people not enjoying this, but it is personally the most enthused I’ve been about this band since Amputechture. I’ve liked all their albums but it’s been since Amputechture that I actually felt excited by them. A much needed refresh, and while it is not perfect and I do think at times might even be too restrained, I think it is ultimately a successful and extremely impressive project and and really achieves some things they attempted in places on Octa and Noctourniquet. It’s even fun at times! (Looking at you, No Case Gain!)
