The world is such a disappointing place that it is such a miracle that David Milch was able to finish the Deadwood movie before his Alzheimer's got too bad to continue.

Obviously the Astral Weeks needledrop made me perk up

I wonder how much involvement Chase ultimately had. Konner was not a huge part of the original show, either.

 

i have more issues with taylor’s direction, or lack thereof, than the writing

 

Yeah, I'm still parsing my feelings about this. Didn't hate it -- honestly, enjoyed it more than I didn't -- but the bad stuff was BAD. The subtle callbacks were nice, but shit like the varsity athlete line felt like Star Wars-level fan service. The Sil impersonation was awful, legit felt like a Fred Armisen impression. And Giuseppe's line about loving the word "motherfucker" for...obvious reasons...was so, so bad.

At the same time, it felt pretty loyal to the themes of the show. I really enjoyed Vera's and Gandolfini's performances. I didn't hate Imperioli's narration and thought the last line was fucking great. I have no idea how it will hold up both as a standalone film or as a Sopranos story, but I'm not mad it exists. I definitely don't need a sequel, though. Agree it could have been better as a special event series.

 

Apparently it bombed spectacularly, but what did you expect? If you give people the option to watch at home or in theaters, the worst returns are going to come from something that is continuing a TV show.

 

So many baffling decisions here

 

Yeah the decision to have young Tony soprano wear the slipknot jacket was weird.

 

I appreciated him having the Ulver poster in his bedroom though, really showed consistency in the worldbuilding

 

-I found this extremely aesthetically pleasing as I feel like most major motion pictures these days are so CGI heavy it felt like this wasn’t a 2021 movie. The cars, the houses, the attire, the vocabulary. All nailed down well.

-I think I could’ve definitely used less direct references to the show, as after like the 4th or 5th on the nose punchline pulled from the series it started to feel a bit hokey.

-The Junior reveal did not land well with me. Absolutely no way that no one in any of the families wouldn’t have eventually found out he set it up, nor that the blame wouldn’t have eventually landed back on Harold if not, since it was no secret regarding the feud between him and Dicky. This info would’ve made it into the series.

-Though he has an uncanny resemblance to his dad, Mike G’s part in the movie felt unnecessary and I would’ve loved a heavier focus on Dicky and his family. The storyline doesn’t feel fluid and when the end came all I was left feeling was “ehhhhh alright.”

-Farmiga was the perfect choice for Liv.

The fracturing of Tony and Junior's relationship in season one is supposed to be tragic, egged on by Livia and part of Junior's failure to let people close to him, but now that decision to try to kill Tony just seems like the usual for him.

 

The baby crying everything Anthony touches it. Oh what the fuck haha. Was this supposed to be a comedy?

There was just no focus at all. Tone, pacing, the acting, just a complete mess.

I had to double check and make sure the same dudes who made the show made this because I just can't believe it.

Super disappointed

 

Yeah, I feel the same as everyone else about this. I decided to see this in a theater on Saturday and I had entire auditorium to myself. Shows that most probably just chose to watch it at home.

A vast majority of this was rushed and jesus why did they do Silvo dirty like that? It is a full on SNL impersonation. I feel like if they fleshed this out as a mini-series, it would've cleared any loose ends (especially a better understanding of Harold's endgame/resolution). There are glimmers of hope in this, but for fuck sake -- this just dragged on.

I saw people on Twitter jumping through hoops to say that all of that fan service/the exaggerated impressions were all intentionally bad and that we need to view this as a story being told by an unreliable narrator, Chrissy.

I had the unreliable narrator theory before the movie came out but the narration is so sporadic that it isn't the case. If it was an unreliable narrator, Dickie would be killed by Barry Haydu.

 

If anything, the best use of the unreliable narrator are Tony's own flashbacks in the earlier parts of the show, which heavily romanticizes his father's era. As the show goes on and he learns more about his parent's psychological state, the colors start to fade and the flashbacks are generally darker.

 

the flashbacks to a time when tony was the same age as dickie, and not being driven around by him while he’s in elementary school.

weird shit.

Yeah the first hour was fun, but was just an absolute mess by the end.
