the joke of it all is that Favreau has said his S4 scripts are an entirely different thing, more tied to Ahsoka S2/Thrawn that anything else. Disney pushed for this not only to get a Star Wars movie back in theaters (given the development backlog), but because they likely had gaps in their release schedule due to the strikes. i get maybe alienating casual viewers by just translating a higher-stakes, lore-heavy, interconnected season of television into a movie, so i get why the story is the way that it is (i'm seeing it tomorrow, so idk much about it beyond what's been said here). it's just funny that on top of that, they supposedly didn't do anything of high importance for these characters beyond sending them off on a largely-disconnected adventure, and that this could probably be the end of that story if it doesn't do well. you can still do a one-off but give it stakes or character development, and everything i'm hearing makes it sound like there's none. but hey, anything to make money, i guess. i don't really have high expectations for most SW projects since they vary so much in tone, quality, and audience, so i'm still expecting to have a decent time tomorrow, but i wouldn't be surprised if i just don't revisit this much after.
as someone who didn't watch season 3 and remembers very little of season 1 and 2, it absolutely does not feel like you need to know anything really going in other than who the 2 mains are lol
See every role she's taken in the last 15 years. She's definitely in the "cut a paycheck" phase of her career.
Lowest for a Star Wars film. Even lower than Solo. Box Office: 'Mandalorian And Grogu' Takes Off With $12M Previews
There’s a difference between low stakes adventure that doesn’t tie into anything larger and having no real depth or substance. Thinking about it more, that’s really my biggest issue with this movie. It’s more of a series of action scenes tied together with the bare minimum for plot and no character development. I’m a big proponent of the Lucas “Star Wars is for 12 years olds” idea because they’re meant to be a way to teach lessons and inspire that age group (while also doing the same for those who are older) and this movie is missing that completely. It’s a fun watch, but doesn’t feel very Star Wars.
I'm not sure I agree with the sentiment that this was like the Mario movie. There was cohesive plot of Mando doing the right thing despite being urged on all sides to take shortcuts. This meant standing up for Rotta even though the New Republic wanted to just hand him off to die at the hands of the Hutts. Don't get me wrong, I didn't think it was a great movie at all. I probably give it a 6.5/10 and am currently unsure if I'll see it again unless someone invites me to see it again but it's nowhere near the nonsense of the Mario movie. There's clear motivations for all characters, however shallow those motivations may be.
Oh I forgot to mention the best part of the movie: the soundtrack. Absolutely love the Shakari theme. Some real bangers on here.
I dozed off maybe 5 or 6 times during this The dragon/lizard guy on his rocking chair was cool, I guess
How did they not release this Fathers Day weekend? This wasn’t bad. Just not a whole lot going on. The action was decent. Felt very 90s action movie, especially at the beginning. If anything was too long, especially the Grogu part. Kinda weird that it didn’t tie into the main story at all but that can also be a pro I suppose. It kind of made me want to rewatch Solo. I’m not mad that it exists. Definitely had a story but they didn’t beat you over the head with it. Hope we get a conclusion to the main story though
this was decent. a fun time, but probably the least consequential Star Wars has been for a while aside from Grogu getting to do stuff on his own and Rotta being the last surviving Hutt, unless i'm mistaken on that latter part. my partner loved it.
it's funny to think how low on people's radar this is and how much the marketing sucked for this movie. before we saw it, we stopped by an outlet mall to look for new shoes. i wore my Rogue One shirt to the movie today (just a shirt with the film's logo i got at Disney World a decade ago that had its sales money go to charity), and the guy at the front of the store asked if it was my favorite SW movie (it is), and when i said we were headed to go see the new film, he didn't even know one was coming out.
i do think starfighter will naturally be bigger than this but yeah it feels like the mcu, just flop sweat everywhere
recent mcu is certainly not all (or even mostly) dogshit if you paid actual attention. that's why i fear worse for disney star wars, i don't see anything on par w/ thunderbots, shang-chi or especially gotg3 on the horizon
anyway, i'll most likely never think of this movie again. sucks that the worst star war may still be ahead of us
This would have been better as a palate cleanser between two flagship movies. Can’t believe Scorsese was in this
I’m ok with the idea that the worst SW may be ahead of us if it means they at least take some big swings. If they try new things that don’t quite work or don’t speak to me, but resonate with others, then I’m alright with that. I just don’t want the franchise to become safe and stagnant.
Sorry, capitalism dictates we'll get one focus tested adventure every three to four years until expiration.
the risk-taking is a huge part of it, and God, i hope they take some risks. it's why i ultimately had a great time with The Acolyte despite its flawed pacing and somewhat wooden acting. it felt different and exciting at its best.
