Less excited the more I see tbh. Really not a fan of the tone they're going for here. Cant exactly put my finger on it but feels like its missing part of what I loved in the first 2 seasons of the show.
There’s a Star Wars “movie” going to theaters in a few months, and as far as I can tell, it’s not even notable enough to get its own thread on this site. I’m sure the Glub Shitto heads out there are pumped, but I kinda miss being able to care about this nonsense. At least there’s an original Star Wars re-release due out next year. Though that’s then followed by a movie by the director of Deadpool & Wolverine and that one other Ryan Reynolds movie, and also that hat-wearing king of Glub Shittos is now in charge of everything… Eh, whatever.
It’s not that I think it needs one. It’s just funny to see a series that used to be an event become an afterthought, where the first theatrical film in six and a half years barely has an identity or excitement outside of diehards.
I think the problem for me is that it's hard not to think of this as a movie-length episode without more indication of what makes this deserving of being shown in theaters. Why this instead of a Season 4?
it's also that (outside of printed media) Star Wars used to feel like an event because new movies (and TV when TCW aired) would only come so often. once the Disney purchase happened, more media was produced than before, leading to somewhat of an oversaturation of SW content. combined with the mixed response to most films and shows coming from the Disney era (and a number of scrapped projects), the hype is obviously going to be lower than it was either waiting for a new film or trilogy after a long absence. and it probably doesn't help their case to start with something that's just a big screen continuation of a seven year old TV show that's essentially become the main thing most casual viewers think of when they think of modern SW. my exact thoughts. transitioning a show from TV to film usually indicates a major shift in the overall story being told, and while there will probably be something consequential happening for the Mando/New Republic story, this doesn't really scream "big screen" material. i could be wrong, and i am looking forward to seeing it still, but so far it feels less like a story born out of wanting to make a legitimate, deserving Mando film and more like something to fill a date in Disney's release schedule after pussyfooting during the strikes.
for me it's like I'm a Disney + anti and like can I watch this without having to give the mouse more money who even knows
Gotta say as much as I feel like this going to be an inconsequential movie at the end of day, I do think I’ll prefer it to another season in the hopes that it just gets straight to the point rather than feeling like side quest after side quest.
case in point, this is why S2 is my favorite. the overall arc felt more meaningful for character development, with any one-off "side quest" episodes feeling like they served the story more than those in S1 or S3.
Star Wars releases certainly don’t feel like an event anymore, imo. The Rise of Skywalker and D+ shows killed that. Having said that, I’ll still be in a seat for day one.
I think “Glup Shitto” is my least favorite term when discussing Star Wars because it’s used to reduce world building and back story to a simple derogatory term. It’s like saying it’s stupid to like random background X-Men characters, which is part of the fun of them. As long as it’s not mandatory to know elaborate back story to enjoy a character or follow a story, then I’ve never understood the issue. In this case, adding a character like Embo is cool because he’s just a fun bounty hunter and if someone enjoys the character, they can explore Clone Wars to see more of him. It’s just so weird to me that Star Wars is held to such a different standard than other similar media universes and the idea of bringing established characters back or expanding stories of characters fans enjoy through comics/books/shows is stupid some how.
I don’t think saying “Star Wars should make good stuff” is holding it to some crazy high standard. Also other people not enjoying something shouldn’t lessen your enjoyment of it. Enjoy all the slop they throw out if you want.
I don't think this is what Dodge was saying. I think Dodge just doesn't like the term because it implies giving minor characters a larger backstory and development is a waste of time. It's the Boba Fett debate.
In fairness though, letting Boba Fett do anything more than stand quietly on the background ruined his character each and every time they did it lol
I don’t know what glup shitto means and was just referring to saying Star Wars is held to a higher standard which I don’t even think it true. People are just as harder if not harder on the MCU which is really the only comparable media.
The term comes from an older tweet that went viral and was something to the effect of “Star Wars is funny because fans will be like ‘My favorite character is Glup Shitto who had 2 seconds of screen time, but is really cool in this book or comic that made them important.’” I’m paraphrasing but it was basically a joke about how even the tinniest background characters are someone’s favorite and probably have a wild backstory that few people actually know about. It’s been turned into a negative phrase in the past few years to say that SW is dumb for having a bunch of stuff about random background characters and that they just bring in random characters back for no reason. The standard part was just that especially comics are not seen as inherently bad for bringing back old or smaller characters in the same way SW is and it’s a double standard. The higher standard comment was not made in relation to quality of content, which I totally agree I want to be as high as possible. I will fully admit that I’m probably much more forgiving of things in SW and am easier to please because of how much I love and have connected with the vast majority of it. The term doesn’t impact my personal enjoyment of it, but it does make it hard to have a meaning conversation and engage with others when used negatively because it is so dismissive out of the gate is really my frustration that I was trying to convey.
