They really fall into two different sub-genres though so it's hard to say. But as a cohesive piece, a story, this is one of the best records i've heard in a very long time.
Totally agreed. Love Pioneer the album. Love the acoustic dvd type sound. The cover of You Get What You Give as amazing as well.
Don't blink, because you will, and when you open up your eyes again, you may not recognize a friend Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
I love how they managed to kinda even make the last song sort of go back into the first as best they could. I've always kinda wanted to try that and I think the way they approached it is pretty cool here. Like once you throw this album on it almost never ends haha
Same. I remember dragging my friends to this weird Hurley fashion show where The Maine were the live band and I was one of the only kids who knew the songs. Truly awesome to see the progression from the beginning.
I could ramble about this album for hours. Every member pulls their own weight so brilliantly. It's so clear that this is a group of people that mesh together so well. It's clear that they make the music they love - there's no way they could make an album like this work if it was forced. Not one part of this band is phoned in. This album has really cemented them for me as not one of the best "pop punk" bands around. They are one of the best bands out there. Period. This one's going to be on heavy rotation for a while.
Great post. I'm feeling the same way today. I'm going to go to the pop-up shop here in Chicago after work to pick up a CD, and I can't wait to see them live next month.
Damn I forgot about the pop up shop. I should look up the details for that. Ordered a vinyl, but there's like a deluxe cd of some sort right? I'm bummed I can't actually make the Chicago show, but I'm going to head up to milwaukee the next day, so all's good.
i like this a lot more than american candy, which had the right sound but the songs didn't quite get there. the songs def get there on this one
There's a deluxe album with more songs? EDIT: Never mind, it looks like you just get the instrumental version of the record with it. Still pretty cool.
This is a really, really great album. Goddamn. I don't know if I'm ready to say this is their best album yet but my initial reaction has been overwhelming. Also, I've been listening to them since The Way We Talk also, so, yeah, it's insane how far they've come. Those old songs are still great though. Every time they put out a new album it brings me back to when I was 17 and The Way We Talk came out a couple months after I had gotten my license. I used to jam those five songs on repeat constantly in the car.
I just can't remember if I submitted my name to the album credits. If I did, I definitely want to try to get a copy.
Yeah. The pop-up shop has a two-disc (standard and instrumental) version of the album. I may actually go to the Milwaukee date also! I received an invitation to go with some people the other day. Considering it.
I've got a long history with these guys as well. Pat and Garrett were two of my closest friends for a long time starting in high school due to school and he music scene, also went to high school with Jared and despite knowing each other since we were like 14/15 we ran with different crowds and weren't super close. With the exception of John, who wasn't in a band before, they've always been guys that you could just tell were going to take off one day. The local bands they were in would always kill it and I feel comfortable saying that some of it still holds up today as stuff I can throw on and jam out to. What they did even at 13/14 was so impressive for their ages. When The Maine started, everyone here knew that this was going to be the one that got them off the ground. The band I played in at the time broke up right around the time The Way We Talk was released, we were setting up plans to tour through the summer and things just fell apart. These guys asked if I wanted to head on the road with them instead, so 2008 I was with them all year. I didn't love the music they made at the time, but they're the best dudes out there and we all had a blast going from bars with an audience of 3 to amphitheaters of 3000 with Good Charlotte and Boys Like Girls. We'd pack up from a show and freak out in the van about touring with bands that we grew up on and loved, make stupid videos and constantly jam the Augustana and Phantom Planet records that came out that year. It was such an exciting time. Anyway idk I'm rambling, and I don't do this often because I hate the feeling of "name dropping" and shit, but I'm so beyond proud of these guys and what they've done with their careers. People doubted them early on, but they're easily the hardest working band I know and they always have been. I'm proud to say that The Maine have gone from being some of my favorite people, to one of my favorite bands.
Already listened to the album in full a few times since its release, and of course, they never disappoint! I love the sequence and transitions. My favourite is "The Sound of Reverie". The use of the guitar just is so beautiful and lovely (pun intended!) here. (And along with John's voice!)
