Agreed, i've had this CD in my car from the day it released. Haven't done this with any record in quite some time. I love this record.
My wife and I love this band. We loved the old stuff before we knew each other and we fell in love to the songs on American Candy. We got married on April 2nd and were stoked to find out the new album came out on our honeymoon. We went to Portugal and rented a VW camper van with plans to drive all over and wild camp. The day the album came out we had a couple hour drive to our next stop so we throw the album on and it's all perfect. I remember thinking that I had never seen my wife this happy the entire time I knew her. A bit into our drive I pull over to pee. "I only wanna talk to you" comes on and she leans over and sings the chorus in my ear and tells me it's her favorite one so far. I still remember the way the chorus goes but to this day I haven't played the song again. She goes to the back of the van to grab a snack and I get impatient and start driving again. I'm speeding up and merging on the freeway and we get hit from behind by a speeding mercedes who must have been texting or something cause we were on a two-lane straightaway. Our van does a 180 and barrel rolls off the side of the road. The roof of the van comes off in the roll and my wife is ejected from the car. Thank my Lord Jesus she's alive and had 0 internal bleeding or brain damage. She got out of it with a concussion and some minor fractures, and a whole ton of scars on her face. We spent 10 of the 12 days of our honeymoon in the hospital. I want so badly to be able to go back to this album but am terrified of what might go on in my head when "i only wanna talk to you" comes on. I'm sure the time will come where it won't affect me, but It's a bummer this thing will always be associated with the accident. In the meantime I've loved reading through this thread and seeing all the feedback. So thanks for that, all of you
That's crazy, i'm glad you're both okay! That being said, overcome your fears and listen to the album when you're ready. It's great, and you'll be happy you did.
Wow, what a story. Glad you guys are okay. The great thing about music is it's association with memory and how that can almost transcend time. My suggestion (and it's fair to take it with a grain of salt given how removed I am from the situation) would be to pop that record right back in and get on the road again. Best of luck to you two!
Been revisiting the Pioneer B-sides lately. Have they ever played I'm Leaving live? That chorus is probably one of my favorite things I've heard from them.
I feel like I have to go back to Pioneer. I hated it when it came out, but I legit own every other record in their career, before and after, and was super into them live last month. I think not having one album in their whole career will bother me.
Has he had any documented vocal issues, surgeries, etc? When you listen to their older stuff he really sounds like an entirely different person singing.
My wife turned 25 the other day and we talked through her favorite moments of the year. After talking about everything up till our honeymoon she grabbed the computer and put on "I Only Wanna Talk To You." Before I even recognized the song I was crying, you guys. I have never had such a visceral reaction to a song in my entire life. It was the strangest combination of memory, sadness, thankfulness, and joy. We ended up finishing the album and I didn't really hear it, just felt it. Though I'll probably never listen to it in the car, this album will always be special in a way that I can't really understand yet.
Wow Lovely Little Lonely has blown me away this past week. It's easily their best album and damn it's so catchy as hell! I've listened to Can't Stop, Black & White and bits of Pioneer. How does the rest of their material hold up compared? Are they all as good haha?
If it's not evident by my profile picture, American Candy is perfection. The new record may be their best, but that one is my favorite. Forever Halloween is another fantastic record but it's pretty polarizing among their fanbase.
I wasn't a fan of forever Halloween. I got what they were trying to do but it didn't translate for me. It wasn't bad, but I wouldn't put it top 3. I think they were even better at the pop punk thing.
For sure, i think that really works for him. I thought of "Waiting for my sun to shine" first, for some reason.
If you haven't check out their Brazil dvd, you should def get on it. It's part doc from the Pioneer era. Here'a taste. John'v vox are on point but the whole band is in on point. Top notch crowd interaction too.
I found this a few weeks ago! It's awesome! All those Miserable Youth videos are pretty sweet too, though there isn't much live show footage.
Yep! I've watched the whole dvd. I'm too lazy to look up the video but his vocals on misery during some live performance they did years ago are flawless. Haven't heard him hit those high notes/yells so flawlessly this. Off topic I get a huge Hanaon vibe from this song EDIT: @ Mr. serotonin
