Part of me wants to do a discog run but the other part of me is saying “nah just binge You Are Ok some more”
I only got the chance to have one run so far with You are Ok. There is a lot going on in the music as a whole (as I think it's already been mentioned here); that, and I feel it's too early to tell where this album sits with me. The singles didn't grab me as I thought they would, but "I Feel It All Over" and "Tears Won't Cry (Shinju)" I went back to a few times.
No I remember it well and I see what you mean. I guess for me, the record sounding uninspired isn’t a way of me presuming the band wasn’t inspired making it...I guess lethargic and boring are better words for what I actually said. I definitely feel like of the three I mentioned pioneer is my fave of them - but I feel incredibly lukewarm to all of those releases compared to the love I have for the other.
If you do, don't overlook the Forever Halloween b-sides! That record is my least favorite of theirs, but the b-sides are some of my favorite songs in their entire discography.
the Good Love EP (aka the Pioneer b-sides) is their best imo, at least three songs that are up there with their very best
good love was good enough that it could've ended the actual album, though i do think rock n roll + sun to shine make up the best ending to any of their albums overall
Pioneer wouldn’t be nearly as divisive if they had cut down the middle of the album a bit. I enjoy each of the songs as stand-alones but it drags on a bit. Cut out I’m Sorry, Thinking of You, and Jenny and I think it would flow so much better. Still is my 2nd/3rd favorite of their albums, depending on where I land on the new one. And for the My Hair discussion, that song is really grating lyrically to me. Skip it nearly every time I play AC. Might even be my least favorite song since BW.
Currently going through a breakup and I really don't want to attach this to that, so frustrating not being able to listen.
I actually really like Jenny haha, even more so after I saw this acoustic performance I feel this so hard. Hope things get better for you.
Loving the album. I really like Broken Parts, but do you agree the first verse sounds like One by U2?
I actually really like both of those songs, especially that version of Jenny. The middle of the record is really bogged down and I think removing some combination of those three would have helped make it more listenable. If that makes any sense.
one of the best parts of this album for me is the little piano chord fills during the bridge of "Slip the Noose" such tasteful doo-doo-doo-doos
Yeah this was way more immediate for me than LLL which took several listens for me to go from: “okay this is solid but not sure why it’s getting so many raves” to “huh this is growing on me more” to “umm... okay yeah this album is fucking amazing???” YAO was like an immediate blown away reaction for me personally Both albums own though FWIW and my reaction may have to do with anticipation/excitement and personal taste I 100% get why people might prefer LLL too
