I can get this, feels like a lot take a bit of a *risk* but nothing that takes you away from the true intention of the song, but I do think they have done most of their singles like that historically outside of maybe a handful of singles so idk

Agreed - but isn’t like half the record out at this point? Lol

  3. Is anyone else bothered by the mix on this new track? It sounds super muddy compared to the other 3 singles. Decent hook on the chorus though.

Mix has been interesting on 2/4 of the songs, very muddy in certain parts ^ can agree, Sticky was super well done, Lips mix was great, but April 7th and this although great songs are def a bit muddy

Enjoying this one a lot, but yeah to echo some of the comments that have already been made on this thread – I do find the mix to be a bit muddy and would prefer for it sound cleaner like Sticky and Lips

Definitely can hear the muddiness everyone is saying. What is all that about? Song is really dope as well but it just feels unfinished due to the mix.

Sticky just came on after and wow the difference is night and day!

This has been my main issue with the first few songs too. When I go back and listen to LLL for example, those songs are such amazing *songs* whereas these already feel like a collection of quick singles in some sense (which they are). But I think you get what I mean.

I was a lil nervous from some of the comments, but this is :fire:. Love all of these. The only thing I'm disappointed with is that i've heard half the record, but that's also kinda on me :crylaugh:

Does this sound "muddy" to you?

I didn't notice anything on first listen to the new song, but I wasn't paying particularly close attention.

Something is definitely muddy/off in the mix, but my ear can't really pinpoint what it is exactly

I didn't notice anything in particular. I just noticed that most people thought that the more Reverb-y sounds sounded "muddy". Seemed like a stylistic choice to me cause like others also said, the others seem brighter next to them.

  17. Mostly just sounds hyper compressed to me. Like when those loud parts in the verses kick in, or right after they transition to the chorus — it’s like all of the air gets sucked out of the mix

Hearing it in the Pillar stream was obviously going to be lower quality, but yeah something is definitely off after hearing the HD version. They keep mentioning how the album was finished last year, and after hearing the April 7th/Pretender mixes, I'm wondering how the mixes were cleared for the album. It just sounds "off".

  19. I think my biggest issue with this band is their continuous half-sending on a lot of material. It feels like they've been trying to make the pop thing work but are too stuck in the "scene" and as a result the songs come out half baked. Pretender is a great example, the intro is cool but once those punky drums come in it loses a lot of its charm.

Very excited for the album. Kinda agree so far with the comment that it seems like this is may be missing a throughline or an arc the way LLL had but we only have four of the songs so we’ll have to see

Would the studio environment have anything to do with this? Didn't they record some of it in John's house? Not sure how that would affect the mix or not

Song is meh in the first place and sounds terrible. This is shaping up to be a disappointment after the last two albums

Having listened to Pretender a few more times, I’m enjoying the song itself but the mix is incredibly disappointing, especially since Colby has made them sound so squeaky clean in the past on purpose. An approach that really suits the kind of songs the write these days, I’d say

Damn okay a lotttt of that opinion :crylaugh: I need to listen again. Only heard it 2x.

Definitely wouldn't chalk this album up as a "disappointment" though, haha. They've had at least one of the 4 on top 20 alt radio already. Seems like they're doin' just fine.
