I need to give YAO another try. I’ve tried to listen a few times and just couldn’t get into it. Especially the first three songs. Any other stand out tracks that I should check out? I really enjoy the indie pop stuff (AC, LLL, Self-titled)
You Are OK rules, I would agree that Tears Won’t Cry is the clear weak link on the record but it’s not like a terrible song or anything, everything else is either good or great imo. the album has some of their most dynamic writing, and some of John’s most gripping performances. Slip the Noose is still hands down my favorite opener they’ve done too. I think I would give the edge to LLL overall nowadays as my fav album by the band but for a while, when YAO was newer, they were pretty neck and neck.
I would concur that "Tears Won't Cry" is one of the weaker tracks, and I am firmly out on "Slip the Noose", but once the album gets going "Tears Won't Cry" isn't a big enough slip up to take away its momentum.
I think the One Sunset-Broken Parts sequence is the closest thing the album has to a lull, but those are both still really good songs
YAOK is probably the most unique and distinct album in their catalogue and feels like they really were swinging for the fences after the success of LLL
"Broken Parts" is by far my favorite song on that album. Overall, a record I like, but if I'm honest, I always felt a tad disappointed in it after LLL.
I loved YAO at first, then I kind of cooled on it for a while, but I've really reappraised it this year and it's firmly in my top 4 albums by them, along with Pioneer, LLL, and Self Titled There's not a bad song, I even love Tears Won't Cry
Broken Parts is one of my favorites from that album. Agree, YAO is a good album, just has the misfortune of having to follow LLL.
I'm actually really surprised Tears Won't Cry and/or Slip the Noose are considered weak tracks, I feel like both of those rip
Pioneer doesn’t get enough love as well. That slapped me up when it first came out. Such a departure and upgrade from Black & White
I need to revisit Pioneer, but my early impressions were that it didn’t quite come together as a great full album experience for me, but Time and especially Some Days are 2 of my favorite songs the band has written. the latter’s chorus hook is easily in my top 5-10 hooks they’ve done at the least.
I’ll always hand it to YOA for being so damn ambitious even if a few songs definitely lose me. They were really going by for it on that record. It’s no LLL but as time has proven so far, there is only one LLL
That they went back and worked with Squire for nostalgia. Whether or not you like YAO, nothing about that album comes across as a nostalgia play, hence my sarcastic response
I disagree, Pat literally posted his Twitter convo how they felt that it had been 10 years since working with him and felt like they should work with him again because of it. I don’t think Squire is a very good producer and feel that Colby gets the very best out of them time and time again.
https://chorus.fm/features/podcasts/the-maine-encore-episode-161/ Pretty sure they talk about why they went back to Matt in this interview.
