First listen of this today was overwhelmingly positive. Based on the reactions in this thread I was expecting something sleepy and difficult to latch onto, but I thought it had plenty of energy and the hooks are pretty immediate. Excited to spend more time with it.
DC has been hot and sunny since this record dropped, so I think that has been a huge factor in it growing on me. Doing a deep discog run before the Sunday show, and stumbled upon this full band version of Whoever She Is that has been a B&W bonus track. I don’t think I knew it existed. Super neat window into the band’s transition to their post-major label sound.
Came in here to say exactly this! Took me a few listens to be able to tell tracks apart but now that I can, I’m appreciating this album quite a bit. Alone For a Year and Die to Fall keep getting stuck in my head.
The opening three songs are such a crazy run. It’s makes me want to run though a brick wall kind of energy
The show in Boston last night was truly one of the best, most consistent shows I’ve been to in my life.
Can confirm from DC that this is the tour of all tours for this band. Would love to see an even deeper dive into the new album at some point, but this setlist is top notch
I don't know if Grayscale and Nightly have been switching off, but the set times have been: DOORS: 5:30 PM Broadside: 6:30 PM Grayscale: 7:15 PM Nightly: 8:10 PM The Maine: 9:10 PM
These songs pack a new life to them in the live setting. Definitely recommend everyone catching them on this tour if they're able!
Have not seen them live since the three times I saw them open for Boys Like Girls back in 2009. Gotta be a very different live show experience now than it was then, lol
Ok...this album is really good. Sounds great through my AirPods and car system. It's not the same sonically by any means, but flow wise....it reminds me of listening to LLL and how that flows. IDK what it is....But I get that feeling.
Glad you guys are starting to really love this. I still can’t crack it - however I’m very excited to see these song pop off tomorrow. 100% think they’re going to connect better in a live setting
Definitely love this album. Feels like a more mellow LLL and definitely hits where I am in my musical life right now.
Been loving this album and finding a different song from it stuck in my head every day. My only gripe is the vocal filter on "Palms" that makes it sound like he's singing "Don't sink".
Oh, another thing on this tour is that John has been using two mics. One has a major distortion/vocoder sound to it, while the other is for clean vocals. Can't remember if The Maine ever did that before on tour?
Oh interesting. I've never seen them live, but have seen plenty of bands use similar setups. I'm sure it's much less noticeable in a live setting, but it sticks out like a sore thumb on the record. Reminds me of the filter that Kidz Bop uses for their songs, which drives me absolutely bonkers.
