The action sequences is this episode were so good. Also that eruption at the end. Easily my favorite episode so far.

  3. What an amazing hour of TV

Scientists explain why dumping water in lava causes an eruption.

  4. The water is dissolved in the magma. The magma rises to the surfaces, the water makes bubbles that can turn to steam and the steam and water expand so rapidly that they basically blow the magma apart. That stuff piles up near a central vent and that’s what makes big volcanos. If that water is in a confined area, like a bottleneck, there’s going to be a steam eruption. It’s called phreatomagmatic eruption.

I was enjoying the show for what it was but after episode 6 I’m really invested. Some of the dialogues still feel a bit off but visually it’s just amazing. Really excited for its future.

Number one wish for season two is the firing of whoever on the production staff is obsessed with slow motion.

Prefacing this by saying, I have next to no complaints about this show and I love watching it every week, just as a life-long Tolkien nerd this really sunk in today reading "The History of Galadriel and Celeborn" this morning:

I've been reading Tolkien's Unfinished Tales and it's hilarious how bad not having the full rights this adaptation is in regards to the Galadriel and Elrond characterizations. They've been juvenilized in a major way. Galadriel, considered the wisest living being that isn't a Maiar or Valar by this point, should be about five thousand years old, married for about four thousand of that to Celeborn, and with a daughter Celebrian. Elrond, considered the best living lore master who should be about three thousand years old, should already be the ruler of Imladris/Rivendell if I'm reading the timeline correctly, too.

Curious if/how Celeborn and Celebrian will be introduced. Elrond marries Celebrian and they have Arwen and the twins after the first downfall of Sauron, though, so I don't think we'll see them at all. Galadriel and Celeborn rules Lothlorien only after the Third Age starts, too.

  14. I don't know the names that well so this is the first time I've realized who Elrond is and and now very confused by the casting. What's their explanation for Elrond losing 75% of his chin between now and Fellowship?

~3,000 years passes between Sauron losing the Ring and Frodo destroying it

The appendix to RotK says Elrond doesn't found Imladris until after the ring is forged (Second age 1697)

Gotcha. Unfinished Tales has a few timeline drafts, so that's probably where I got confused there.

It's very confusing and I wouldn't know this if I hadn't just reread the trilogy and have it right here on my desk lol

Wait wait! - you're actually correct. The show is changing the timeline. The show's Numenor storyline is supposed to be in the early 3000s, just before Ar Pharazon seizes the throne but the rings are forged way earlier like in the 1500s

The show is essentially fan fiction. That’s what I keep telling myself in order to not get annoyed at a show that I am actually enjoying.

Oh, absolutely. It was more of a realization/thought about how stupid it was to break apart the entire set of works so that you can't use all to adapt.

I just caught up. I kept shouting at the TV asking if anyone was going to unwrap the sword hilt just to check. Then I was like nah obv they did that off screen. Omg I yelled with that axe/hatchet reveal I was so furious and while I rly liked the episode, nobody thought to just take a gander?? I don't get too hung up on plot things typically but for some reason my brain has decided to be infuriated about this lol.
