I hope it’s Tom Bombadil (it won’t be)

remember Sauron always comes in fair form. Not sure who he is but wouldn’t be totally surprised if we met him.

Really enjoyed the first two episodes. I am all the way in now.

saw someone tweet that it would be a cool twist if the mystery man ended up being a balrog. I have no idea if that’s what a balrog can come from or not. Maybe it’s an awful theory. But I thought it’d be interesting.

The balrogs are maiar… but I don’t think that’s gonna be the direction.

    What is a maiar?

There are two God-like species in Tolkien’s mythology: the Valar (there’s 15, including Morgoth who is the big bad from the prologue of the series) and the Maiar (I guess kinda more like angels). Gandalf, Saruman, Sauron, Radagast, the Balrog in Moria are all different maiar in the LOTR/Hobbit movies.

so they're basically like fire demon wizards?

im leaning most towards meteor boy being a blue wizard, it's the least stupid option

The maiar can choose their forms. They’re kinda just spirit beings that decide how they want to be seen. I think when in Middle Earth they have to chose a form and stick to it, ie why Gandalf looks the same for hundreds of years. So when the evil maiar chose their forms, they got stuck as Balrogs or what have you.

Edit to say: I’ve read the Silmarillion easily 7-8 times and I still get confused.

Why would only one blue wizard show up though...??? They are always described as a pair, no? That makes me lean towards Gandalf or Saruman or even Radagast, although that last one is extremely unlikely. Prob about as likely as Tom Bombadil at this point.

I don't think Sauron himself anymore now that it's shown The Stranger. I only thought Sauron when all you saw was the meteor / fireball shooting through the sky. Sauron's fair form is always described as quite fair, like an elf, right?? Although I suppose with a quick shower and shave The Stranger would be a good looking dude.

From what I’ve heard it’s way too early for Gandalf.

I've read a lot of people saying exactly that, but then I've also read that they're condensing the timeline by fairly large chunks for the show.

I’m pretty sure all five wizards came over together, yeah? And we know the rings are already made at that point because Cirdan gives his to Gandalf.

Best argument I’ve seen for “a form of Gandalf”

This is very random, but I was not expecting Galadriel to just hop off the back of the boat like she did. I assumed she was gonna come sailing back out of the magical clouds without the rest of her elf buds, having dropped them off but declined to stay herself. I don't know the exact geography, but it seemed like a LONG swim back to Middle-Earth.

I think her hope would be to somehow find a way back other than just swimming. Because yea that would be a super long distance even for an elf, she just knew she couldn’t go through the gate even if it meant death.

Greatly enjoyed episode 1. Definitely multiple moments where I felt like I was back watching LOTR for the first time again. IDK if it quite lives up to the epicness of the movies (those moments where the soundtrack is blaring of the sweeping landscape are hard to top), but pacing with television shows is always gonna be different from movies and thus was still fun which is all that matters

2/2 so far. Really intrigued by all the story lines so far. I wish I knew more about this part of the lore so I had more guesses as to some of the mysteries so far.

i’ll be honest i did not dig the beginning, felt a lot like The Hobbit movies both in visuals and the stretching/changing of Galadriel’s story. but after sitting with it, and greatly enjoying the rest of these two episodes, it bothers me less.
