Also, regarding the genre thing, I definitely feel like this was a black comedy mixed with psychological thriller elements.

So question, what is the mermaid supposed to represent?

It's not out of style by any means, it's just super expensive to shoot on film and also changes how you shoot. You can't do take after take until you get what you like. It's a hassle to handle. There are big directors who still shoot and edit film (Christopher Nolan being a huge champion of it) but it's just not possible for a lot of small directors. It's great that Eggers was able to.

the imax cameras nolan shoots with are film? i would have assumed for the size of the platform he had to go digital

As far as I know it's still film. I know even as far as DKR he was still editing film the old way, literally cutting and pasting negatives which seems insane.

Film is definitely coming back. I do (bad) photography with 35mm and 120mm and just in the past few years I'm seeing more and more brands and options for film. But god damn is it expensive.

That’s fair and I agree it’s downsides are a hamper. I guess it’s just that watching this made me realize how much nicer film looks, despite the many strides digital has made over the years. The details and lighting just look better to me, like the inky blacks and the shadows.

The cameras are massive and for a while the only thing they could really shoot with them were the action scenes because the motor is so loud.

Maybe it’s referring to unusual acts of violence that aren’t particularly graphic. Like strangling someone with a pool noodle. It probably won’t be that.

After the Witch he was working on Nosferatu, which he's put off, so maybe the gap between The Lightouse and The Northman won't be as long. It seems like they're getting ready to start shooting this

The Lighthouse was announced for like two years before it came out, I don't know if he ever officially started on nosferatu he just wants to do it when he is ready

I don't know, after the Witch he was attached to three separate projects. Nosferatu, The Knight and the Rasputin miniseries. I feel like it was just a few months before The Lighthouse was "announced" and started filming.

I'm just saying I wouldn't be surprised if it comes out late 2021/early 2022.
