Favorite part of the movie. The lighting on Dafoe's face made him look like a werewolf in an old silent horror film.

 

My favorite part of the Hark! speech is Dafoe has already established that he takes these sea tales and legends VERY seriously, so when he's calling Neptune to come up and absolutely fuck up Pattinson just for saying he doesn't enjoy his cooking he fucking MEANT IT and was COUNTING ON IT

I don’t think he dropped him, sounded like the rope breaking

 

I think he was dropping and catching him, causing strain on the rope which eventually broke because he was being loose with it.

 

I didn't catch this but my baby bro did when he saw it - apparently old Thomas references young Tommy's "Promethean fate" in one of his long curses. if the light = fire then the end of the movie totally mirrors Prometheus.
love how much of a history/mythology nerd Eggars is.

 

I’m under the impression that Pattinson laughing maniacally at the end was due to the fact that he went through all that and it turned out to just be a normal fucking light. Anyone else have thoughts on the ending?

 

That was the conclusion I came to as well.

 

I hadn't thought of that, but it makes a lot of sense.

 

Also didn’t consider that but really like that interpretation

 

OH I thought the lamp was so bright that it actually burned his eyes

 

I like that thematically but not sure how he gets blown back down the stairs if that's the case

 

I didn't interpret his reaction as disappointment, I thought it was pretty close to the usual (like...ALWAYS) Lovecraft "seeing something so unreal that you lose your mind" thing.

 

it felt very The Dark Tower to me, if any of y’all have read that

 

I didn’t think he got blown back. I think he was just so brittle at that point after what all he had endured and just lost his footing.

EDIT: didn’t he chug a massive amount of that oil right before making his ascent? On top of only drinking that machine oil concoction and liquor for the past week(s)?, I’m wondering how he was still standing haha.
