does anyone have a theory of what actually happened in this movie

Has this world stopped asking what it's thinking?

I think that Defoe never existed (ghost of the island?) and Pattinson died when he dropped while painting the lighthouse. The guilt he talks about in the narrative of the film was coming over him in his dying moments while being pecked.
Or whatever. It could be anything.

Dafoe was the one who dropped Pattinson though.

I prefer to believe it was mostly real. Maybe not the Mermaids, but who knows.

I keep thinking about a few specific moments. After Dafoe sabotaged Pattinson’s escape attempt and chases after him with the axe; he then completely changes the narrative when arguing saying that it was Pattinson who was pursuing Dafoe with the axe. So I kind of think Thomas has been in his head and was just toying with him. Didn’t Thomas’ last assistant kill himself? Might help us understand Thomas’ motives a bit more. Also I was wondering what brought on Thomas’ decision to write those misleading/false(?) entries in the log.

thoughts on what Pattinson saw when looking in the Lighthouse?

also I thought it would have been pretty cool to have the sea king actually spear Ephraim to finally kill him just like Thomas told him haha

For a few minutes of the film, I thought Defoe might have been an older version of Pattinson, and it was just Pattinson going mad by himself, with himself, but that fell apart for me somehow. [SPOILER/]

My theory is that it's a film about descending into madness in isolation, & because it's a film, technically none of it really happened, & it doesn't matter.

Sorry, lol. I have stupider conversations about stupider movies all the time (go into any comic book movie thread on this dang site). I don't actually care. I'm just in both a good mood & a sassy mood this morning.

Loved this. My wife is not a fan of horror (she gets creeped out/unsettled very easily), but I sold her on this being more of a psychological thriller. I am pleased to say she also loved the movie.

Anyone have any recommendations for podcasts taking a good deep dive into this film?

I don't think there's anything too elaborate about it. We have an old ex-sailor who is very superstitious and I think he's doing everything he can to slowly drive his partner crazy. I'll echo what was mentioned earlier about him trying to confuse Pattinson with the axe narrative, and also he tells him they've been there for 7 months instead of just an extra day or two. We learn at the end that he planned on giving him severance with no pay the entire time, and that might just be his habit so he doesn'y have to pay his partners.

Pattinson's character is seeing things because of what happened in his past, but the tall tales and general mysticism of Dafoe's character/the island I think really magnify his descent into madness until he eventually kills his partner.

this is the only thing I wanted

Holy shit this was something else. I'm going to need some time to process my thoughts, but damn this was great. I had this claustrophobic and unsettling feeling the whole time, like I was stuck there with them. The aspect ratio added to that a lot.
Dafoe is just chewing up the scenery and Pattinson is on a level I don't think I've seen him at before (and he was already fantastic in my mind).

Really in awe of the acting in this. Its probably so hard to sell that kind of dialect as natural but they did a fantastic job, especially Dafoe. However despite the technical mastery on display the story rarely pulled me in and by the end I was glad it was over. Could have sworn it was 2.5 hours but its less than 2.
