Finally saw this and quite liked it. I expected it to hit me harder emotionally, but I like that the trade off was it being very fabular. Honestly Matt Zoller Seitz's review pretty much nails it, as he usually does: The Life of Chuck movie review (2025) | Roger Ebert Also, a lot of trash opinions in this thread.
just saw this and as I expected from Flanagan I adored it. funny that a lot of the reactions in here and even the trailer made it seem like a straightforward inspirational kinda movie but the first 30 minutes is the most terrifying shit I've seen in a minute. think the feelgood sequences are pretty well balanced by some harrowing stuff but I'm an easy mark for Flanagan
also forgot to say while we were in the waiting area the cinema played Self Control by Frank Ocean followed by Only Ones Who Know by Arctic Monkeys. motherfuckers were trying to get me crying before the movie even started lmao
Flanagan has to be in on the joke. The narrator stating that the grandma loves rock n' roll and then turning on the radio and it's Dance Hall Days is hilarious. My mind was anticipating 100 different songs before that one.
i don't think this is trying to be as compelling as ppl are criticizing it for failing to be, if that makes sense
Yeah I get that. This didn't seem as lofty and self-serious as I assumed it would be. I just don't think Flanagan's style lends itself well to whatever tone he was going for. I also don't think he was up his own ass as much as the criticisms claim. I liked the third act quite a bit, but the other stuff fell pretty flat for me.
