The average person who would want to see this film would want and expect to see Ganon as he's almost always the villain even in games where it looks like he isn't. Trying to be cute by playing a long game only works if you think a sequel is guaranteed, which it very much isn't. Start with Ganon, then explore other folks like Vaati or Majora in a sequel. It's the most logical move.
i have almost no faith that any live action media for this franchise will be good, so just make it.....fun?
But in every game Ganon is someone who is built up throughout the story. He isn’t someone that is treated like the first boss, or like Bowser in the Mario games that gets defeated repeatedly throughout the game. In some games he doesn’t even show up until the first initial main antagonist is gone, like Zant in TP. They know it will be a success. Allow the story to breath.
Breathe. And whatever they do, if they're smart it won't follow a "multiple dungeons, multiple bosses" video game pattern because that is not easily adaptable to a film format, so the whole "Ganon is never the first boss" argument would be moot.
If the movie introduces Link, has him train, and rush him confronting Ganon in a 2 hour span, but not explore multiple dungeons, multiple areas, etc then that would be creative suicide and a good way to make the movie not successful. Imagine if Peter Jackson said “nah, let’s have Frodo destroy the ring in the first movie in case we cant make a sequel”. You can’t go into making an IP like Zelda without the confidence of more films. A self contained a story for a single film is not how Zelda stories can be told. Works for Mario, not Zelda.
Firstly, that's a bad example because Peter Jackson made all three films together because they knew going in that there would be a film for each book. Second, if we have Link go from region to region exploring dungeons, the film is going to be eight hours long. You have to have concessions when translating to a different medium. I expect that the general layout of different regions and races will be kept and the general idea of Ganondorf being a threat to the kingdom, and the general lore with the Triforce, but I do not expect Link to be going to eight different dungeons to collect its pieces. Be sensible.
That was my point. He knew a story like that couldn’t be condensed into 1 film. (originally he did have it at 2, instead of 3, though, but that’s another topic). It’s the same with Zelda.
Not really because LOTR was an adaptation of a specific story and I incredibly doubt the Zelda film is adapting OOT or anything more than an original story in that universe. It can be as long or short as they want.
You really think Nintendo of all companies will take one of their most famous IPs that is specifically known for adventure and story, and neuter it down to a cookie cutter 2 hour story where Link defeats Ganondorf an hour after being introduced to the character?
And I really liked Wes’ Apes movie, which was surprising and tonally felt like an analogous blueprint for the pacing and scale of a LOZ movie. I have faith it’ll be good, I’m just unsure of what direction they’re going to go with the material, and there’s not enough meat to chew on to stop speculation. I’m in a wait and see mode now
You think Link will not have met Ganon for the first hour of the movie? You realize films used to be an average of an hour and a half, right?
Tbh I have absolutely no idea what to expect out of this film. Still wish it was a series with 8 episodes per season, with a new timeline in each season. Would give more time to flesh out characters and have more dedicated dungeons/temples
This would be really cool and would be ideal, but we don't live in a really cool, ideal world, so... alas.
I don’t see how. They have to establish Hyrule, Link, his calling, weapons, etc etc, plus for Link to defeat Ganondorf he will have to learn of the master sword, so then he’ll need to first get the triforce in order to get the master sword, all while learning about Ganon. That’s a lot to shove in. Unless the story just goes lol Link congrats you are already worthy of the master sword, no hero’s journey for you.
The Neverending Story was 94 minutes. Legend was 89 minutes. Willow was 126 minutes. Like, this only doesn't work if you keep thinking like a fucking video game.
