Based on the legendary Nintendo video game franchise. “This is Miyamoto. I am pleased to announce that for the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda, Zelda will be played by Bo Bragason-san, and Link by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth-san,” he wrote, sharing images of the pair in costume. “I am very much looking forward to seeing both of them on the big screen.” Sony first announced it would distribute and team with Nintendo to co-finance a Zelda movie in the fall of 2023, with the Planet of the Apes franchise’s Wes Ball coming aboard to direct, and Miyamoto and Avi Arad set to produce. T.S. Nowlin penned the most recent draft of the script. Speculation on casting for the project has been rampant, with many fans taking to social media to name Euphoria‘s Hunter Schafer as their pick for the part of Zelda. Sources said that Mason Thames and Brady Hepner were two other finalists for the role of Link. The film is slated for release in theaters on May 7, 2027. Very curious if Link will talk in this, if it is an original story, or if it is based on a game. Man I wish we just had an HBO series where each season was about a specific game, with new actors for each descendent of Link and Zelda. Would be really cool
Link will definitely talk in this. Link talks to characters in the games, the player just doesn't hear him. I also think it will be an original story. If they try to retell a 10-50 hour story (depending on the game) in a 2 hour film they would be setting themselves up for failure. (Unless this is secretly the first of an already planned story that will be told over multiple films)
They need to take familiar elements from various games and make their own version of a "zelda". Each game is essentially a reset (besides the occasional direct sequel) so it's best to have a unique take rather than a direct adaptation of any single game.
Yeah I have very little confidence in a Sony movie made by a director who is best known for Mazerunner and Planet of the Apes haha Gimme an HBO story created by Damon Lindelof or something
Literally wondered out loud these exact questions yesterday. I don't think Link will be mute, and there's precedent in the Zelda Manga for him talking. I kind of don't want them to adapt a game though, as it's always hard to properly adapt a game straight up because of how much you're only doing through gameplay and how dense (or flimsy) game plotlines can be. I would rather an original story with enough familiar elements to make it appropriately Zelda like but still made to fit the different medium.
I am not familiar with maze runner but i thought kingdom of the planet of the apes is a good enough test run for zelda. I dont think this will be very good but ill be there day one lol
it would be wild to make him mute in a movie since he's no longer the player analogue, he's a character in a story. they could do it, it'd just be bananas. he canonically talks in the games! just not in cutscenes. he talks in the manga!
Not mute I guess although Zelda does mention in BOTW and TOTK that he barely talks and is really quiet
Link should talk, but doesn’t speak often. Use the reasoning from BOTW that because he’s the chosen one who wields the sword that seals the darkness, he keeps quiet to focus on his role. He feels like being in that role, he should not burden others with his problems, so remains quiet most of the time.
Link being the Ryan Gosling in Drive archetype would be really funny. Are there more examples of the main characters in a movie only saying like 5 words
Cautiously optimistic for this. It could either be really good or really bad. Zelda is one of my all time favs
