If I'm paying over $50 for a game then I'm getting a goddamn physical copy.

I'm usually team digital, but this is the kinda game that I don't want to disappear years later if my switch dies and nintendo cuts online services for the switch

Plus im too lazy to buy a bigger SD card. 128GB is nottt enough

  5. Digital for me. But I’m sure I’ll buy a physical copy for the inevitable port to whatever console they do next

I’d like a physical copy, but my Mario kart 8 broke when it literally never left the switch after it entered so now I’m too scared to waste my money

Digital also sucks because it means you can’t ever potentially resell it. There’s no sort of digital discount to counter that fact

  12. Digital all the way. By the team I'd beat a game and be able to resell it, it would not be worth the trouble.

Physical > digital easy. You miss out on certain things when you go digital. E.g. you can't eject a digital copy and snap it half in a fit of rage. You lose those moments of catharsis.

    I’m going physical.

However don’t forget about the Voucher deal on the eshop. 2 games for $100. Plus I think you can usually get a $100 eshop gift card for $90 at Costco too.

Physical v. digital is a perennial question for me. Even without the conflict of ownership/longevity, there's the trickiness of being a collector at heart (or a dragon, as my wife says) but also having finite spaces and funds to store/display things.

I amassed a pretty huge collection of CDs in my time (no surprise for this site), winnowed them down to like 250 when I got married... and then a couple years ago most of them were stolen, and although there are definitely a bunch I miss having, I saved the most important ones to me (I keep them separate) and it's been quite nice having less clutter and being able to shift my focus to buying vinyl of albums that I love, which are better to display and curate anyway. It was kind of eye-opening to start evaluating new purchases—instead of asking "do I want this?" I now ask "do I want to own and keep and display and cherish this, or do I just want to enjoy it?" That's led to grabbing some cool vinyl records and t-shirts, but eschewing CDs and merch and decorations that I have no room for and just streaming (or buying digitally to support bands).

Anyway, the music stuff had a ripple effect on other media. Movie library is down to like ~25 physical copies (mostly collector's editions), I've got a little shelf of CDs and a stack of vinyls, I've got a few nice pieces of art/merchandise for my desk and media areas. Books have been trickier, since I'm foremost a reader, but shifting my focus toward digital copies or nice hardcovers has made a big difference, and my shelves look prettier.

...Oh, wait, we're talking about videogames? Yeah, this tangent was getting there. I've got 2 physical games for my PS5 so far (Elden Ring, Valkyrie Elysium) and am just leaning really hard into the PS+ Premium subscription. For the Switch, my physical library is maybe like 12 games, and I've got the rest digitally. The physical games are all ones I'm proud of owning and want to show off to people—Zelda, Mario, Octopath, Bravely Default, Smash Bros., that sort of thing. So, after trying in vain to secure a collector's edition of TOTK, I've got a physical copy preordered. For me, it's well worth the price and well worth the physical storage space, because I know it's a game that'll bring me a lot of joy.

I've done a pretty good job of avoiding spoilers so far, but what I've heard has me really excited. I'm taking the day off work to play. It's the first time in my life I've ever done that. In fact, my wife and kids are visiting her family for the day, and my family will be out of town, so I'm camping out at my parents' house with a nicer TV and a cavalcade of snacks for an all-day gaming session. Very, very excited about it.

Dude I had the same thing happen to me with my CDs. I was building up a pretty good selection of metal CDs across like 3 different cases, and then someone broke into my car and stole them all. I'm like, congrats I guess? There's no value there and now you have to carry all those CDs lol.

Prolly going digital unless I can get the target I sell beer at to sell me a copy before store hours when I’m in there.
