Apathy and Exhaustion is one of the best records ever. "Boatless Booze Cruise" was one of my best friend and I's go-to drinking songs. After that record my 2nd favorite has to be "The Greatest Story Ever Told." It has some of my favorite Larry Arms songs ever. "Drunk Mouth Kitchen Smile", "The Ramblin' Boys of Pleasure", "A Wishful Puppeteer"... "Buttsweat and Tears" EP is also fuggin' great.
they are such a blast live too. damn i thought i stumbled across some pretty exclusive info back there oh well
I agree with you on those being my favorite two as well, but I think most people have Calcutta at the top at this point.
Every record from Greatest Story and on is so damn good. One of my favorite bands. Can't wait for a new one
I think my ranking would be something like: Apathy Greatest Story Oh, Calcutta Cocktails Buttsweat Metropole Ghost Stories Guided Tour
I could be talked into that because of Slowest Drink and the fact that I tend to like shorter releases more than compilations. But some of the Cocktails songs are some of my favorite songs from them. I also want to add that I like the first two albums a lot. I just wish they were in a position to have better recordings for them.
Slowest Drink is probably my fav Larry song Calcutta Buttsweat Greatest Story Apathy Metropole Cocktails Ghost Guided
Favorite songs looks something like: First Eviction Notice Drunk Mouth Kitchen Smile Slowest Drink 100 Resolutions Pensacola Lose Your Illusion 1 Hesitation Station Gravest Words Ramblin’ Boys of Pleasure Navigating the Windward Passage Seventeener
new larry arms podcast is up. each episode focuses on the albums leading up to their new one. first episode's up, discussing the greatest story ever told: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/road-to-the-skeleton-coast
second podcast episode is up - this time it's focusing on Ghost Stories: Road to the Skeleton Coast: Episode Two: Ghost Stories on Apple Podcasts
This second episode was good in terms of the nuggets about the band and the Chicago scene. It was also funny hearing Brendan talk about Mike Giampa lol.
I love that "Old Mexico Way" is what he started with for recording and made it the template for the whole album, lol
I forget how much I enjoy Ghost Stories. I've been listening to it the last few days after running through the podcast. I'd pay for a re-worked Ghost Stories with better production, the "secret" songs split up, and maybe a few of the tracks re-imagined if they thought they could add to something.
Ghost Stories and that episode gave me a whole new appreciation for it. "Light Breathing" and "!06 South" are gems. And it would be great if the album got a remixed/remastered release. I didn't expect Slapstick to be the next one to discuss for the upcoming podcast, haha. Gonna go revisit that stuff!
