I don’t really love that they flat out said what Abby’s goal is. Would have liked a little more ambiguity there, feel like the shock isn’t going to be nearly as high as it was in the game.

  2. So the cordyceps making its way into Jackson is new. Wonder where that goes.

Interested to see if/how they expand on the seraphites. Having just played the game, that feels like an aspect that could be explored a little more in the show.

Agree but still think it’s going to happen next week, I think it will still hit hard.

Eugene having a little more context is interesting.

Although the most intriguing new wrinkle is that Dina is becoming tight with Joel. A movie night?

I’m guessing the cordyceps pipe explains the horde getting to Jackson’s walls in the trailer. The horde will separate Joel from Jackson, he’ll save Abby, and get back to her crew, all while Jackson is preoccupied with the horde. Episode will end with golfing.

Makes perfect sense to me. Just need a reason for Ellie to get there, because her seeing him die is the crux of her motivation for the rest of the game.

Maybe Joel’s already out on patrol and she goes after him after the attack starts.

I don’t think she’ll get as much hate as Laura Bailey did but I’m bracing for the worst.

Yeah I wasn’t huge on that either. Would have preferred them to keep the viewers in the dark for a while.

    Very solid episode though!

Loved it. The casting is great all around, and loved they put the intro to stalkers here

Really curious how they're gonna split this game into multiple seasons for the show. I am guessing they're gonna do two, but I can see the last part of the game the slaver gang stuff being it's own season for season 3.

The obvious season ending point is when Abby is at the theater, but before her fight with Ellie.

Yeah, guessing theater cliffhanger this season, theater climax in season 3, then farm/Santa Barbara season 4.

Yeah I see this season ending at the theater.
S3 ending at the theater again.
If S4 NEEDS it, it'll be a shorter season encompassing the rest of the game.

I also think the Abby opening was a bit odd, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the showrunner/writers want the audience to try to sympathize for her before that “event” happens. I’m not sure it will work, but I feel like that’s why they wanted to go ahead and have her reveal that info 5 minutes into the S2 premiere.

I personally was not able to care for Abby while playing the game. When Mel calls her a piece of shit and that’s she’s always been a piece of shit I was like, “yes! You nailed it!” I do think Ellie should have stopped her revenge tour after the theater fight though. The cycle of violence needed to stop. Abby does do some good things, I’m not ignoring the parallels between her and Joel by taking in the kid (blanking on his name). But I just was never convinced to like her as a character.

The theater fight where you have to beat Ellie felt wrong to me. Even with Abby showing some good part of her, I just wanted her to lose, but not die. Ultimately, I’m glad she lived at the end and had lost any ill will towards Ellie, seeing the pointlessness of it all.

All that to say, if they can help reframe Abby to make her more sympathetic in the show, I’m all for it. Cause the game’s structure just didn’t do it for me. I understand the decision to do it that way. But it just doesn’t work for me.

As someone who has lost much of my family already, a game essentially focus on death of loved ones and the resulting grief with how to deal with it is deeply therapeutic.

  19. I had no issue sympathizing with her during my playthrough, but I'm guessing the showrunners know it was a point of contention and want to establish her character and motivations from the get go.

I also like that Joel has more of a relationship with Dina in the show. It'll give more weight to her going to Seattle with Ellie later.

  23. just reached Ellie's Seattle Day One on 2nd playthrough (pc). the game is sadder/scarier in black and white. unfortunately the only two filters that do that are noir, which is too dark, and 1960, which is too grainy and has some reds (blood) and yellows (sunlight). sepia is probably the best monochrome filter but i just hate brown

If we really go to Top Golf on episode 2 then Sunday will be a whirl of emotions: celebrating the resurrection of Jesus to mourning Joel all in the same day.
