Started listening to the podcast on my drive this morning. It's good! I do wish they'd repeat their names more, I still have a hard time picking up who's Neil and Craig.
This was talked about in the podcast as well. It's fucking terrifying, and makes me appreciate the spore change so much more. Only 3 min.
ok so actual thoughts on this episode; - the intro ruled, idk if they'll continue opening each episode with stuff from the past/pre-outbreak, but this opening was exceptionally chilling. - i spoiled major plot points for myself before i even knew this was going to be a show, so knowing a lot of the major story points and future emotional scenes i think will allow me to just enjoy the story more rather than anticipating, which i actually prefer. two episodes in and i feel like we've already had this show for far longer than just 2 weeks. - cant wait for nick offerman lol - didnt know tess dies so early so that was sad but, very much a situation you saw coming a mile away are we spoiler tagging plot points in a 10 year old story? i assume no? lol
I think people are spoiler tagging anything that is from the game that hasn't been adapted yet, as there are people watching that never played the games.
@Sean Murphy what @Penlab said. Since this is the TV show thread, and not the video game thread, we're spoiler tagging things that haven't been shown yet.
RE the discussion of video game adaptions going forward... I think this is a unique case in that it features a huge fan of the game and video games in general, and one of the creators and president of the studio of the game. If rights are sold, and the original voices are left on the sidelines, we'll continue to get mostly doo doo. I think this is striking gold as it's someone who knows TV and someone who knows the game. I am completely fine with changes, and recognize the challenges and limitations of taking 1 medium and transforming it into another. Sadly, too many small brains don't get that. Even with this show, there are complainers and whiners that think you can literally do a 1:1 and everything would like it.
I just think Mazin is a tv genius. Druck struck gold taking that meeting I am very very excited for yet another wave of mind-bogglingly awful game adaptations with precisely none of the delicate guidelines that Mazin has been intricately laying out in press interviews applied to them Craig Mazin: if you try to tell your own story in the game world while wedging in fanservice inscrutable to a mass audience, you'll alienate everyone Studio execs: we're excited for both fans of the series and audiences everywhere to finally experience the rich storytelling of Minecraft in live action
It isn't like this is the only successful video game adaptation. Sonic got a sequel, the new Mortal Kombat is going to get a sequel, and the new Mario movie is probably going to be a huge hit. There aren't that many games that are as indebted to film as The Last of Us. The new God of War games would work in the same way (mostly because they were trying to be like The Last of Us).
The Last of Us is certainly my favorite video game adaptation so far however I do also enjoy: Pokemon Detective Pikachu Both Sonic movies The Resident Evil movie series is very fun The OG Super Mario Bros movie is insane, but kinda fun I kinda like Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within The Illumination Mario movie will make $1B Can the media please chill with the "WILL THIS FINALLY BREAK THE VIDEO GAME ADAPTATION CURSE????" it's broken. new discourse!
TBH the problem with most video game adaptation is that some of the stuff in the game would just look weird/goofy as shit on screen, especially when done with practical effects...think of Gears of War and the drones and all the other locusts done in a practical effects setting in like the 80s or 90s lol. It would look really weird and stupid! But in today's world of improved practical effects PLUS being able to us special effects to enhance the look on stuff or just completely digitally render something, makes these things look way less clunky and goofy. ANd I say that as someone that tends to prefer the practical effects over vfx
I feel like if Mario was released closer to summer, it'd hit $1B way faster than it's current release date.
